WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008 Xbox 360 Review
30 May 2010
Excerpt: Whilst I could overlook problems such as particular moves being too easy to reverse, there was something I didn’t like on previous games in THQ’s aging wrestling series, that being the strengths and weaknesses of each wrestler, or should I say lack of. With the tenth game in the WWE SmackDown! series THQ and Yukes have attempted to address this with the addition of superstar fighting styles.
Conclusion: WWE wrestling is fake, and runs off of a script whenever possible. Since we’re talking male soap-opera here and not the Ultimate Fighting Championship, it is entirely possible that the gnat-like Mysterio could take out the Herculean Kane if the writers so desire. A mismatch win is far less likely now with WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 ’s fighting style categories, which slightly disrupts the balance that its predecessor had.
Summary: All in all, Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 is the best of the series thus far, but has a long way to go if it wants to be crowned World Heavyweight Champion of Wrestling Videogames. There are some advantages, however. ECW is better booked in this damn videogame than they have been since the brand restarted! How sad is that? Smackdown and RAW actually, you know, COMPETE here.
Conclusion: Overall, WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2008 is a solid
wrestling game that only hardcore fans will
appreciate. The weapons here have been
overhauled and the cool part is that you can set
these on fire! Though the game has a good lineup
of superstars, we would love to see more legends
in the next year's roster. Both the AI and
collision system still need some tweaking.
Excerpt: Another year, another WWE game from THQ. They arrive like clockwork and despite their big build up prior to release, more often than not the game we get is nothing more than a slightly tweaked version of the previous year's effort. WWE Smackdown! Vs RAW, more than any other franchise out there, really needs a reboot, with the team at Yuke's seemingly being stuck in a rut.
Excerpt: Pro wrestling is odd thing to recreate in a videogame because it?s the only sport where the videogame version is not only more competitive, but also more realistic, than the ?sport? being simulated. While pro wrestling pretends it?s real, the main skill of these giant brutes isn?t athletics; it?s acting. No, not the dialogue, the threats, the ?soap opera? storylines, or even the ill-considered Hollywood moonlighting.
Summary: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 features eight unique styles, each having its own strategy and exclusive attributes, new rosters, more environmental hot spots, improved out-of-ring action, enhanced online community support and much more.
Excerpt: WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 lets players develop the WWE stars of today into the legends of tomorrow. The #1 wrestling franchise in the world develops more depth and strategy with prominent new features, key annual enhancements and incredible graphics while making its much anticipated debut on three new video game systems. It's time to live the life of a Superstar. How will you play...
Conclusion: When it comes to proven sports franchises, you know the drill . Any new installment in the series updates the roster, tweaks the gameplay without making it too unfamiliar, and sharpens the graphics to match the day’s standard. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 meets all these expectations and that would have been acceptable, if some of the changes it made weren’t so un acceptable.
Pros: Solid foundations, ECW superstars
Cons: Restrictive superstar types, Complicated submission system, Lack of story flow and purpose, Repetitive commentary
