Conclusion: The gameplay is solid, and it's a refreshing change to play a game on Kinect that utilises a complex control system and makes it (for the most part) work. A good title, worthy of a few more owners. Edit* Since this review someone has managed to unlock all the glitchy achievements and a guide can be found here: The Defending the crown achievement in Winter Stars worth 222 points Win 3 Cups in the third chapter of the career.
Excerpt: This holiday season, tons of kids and adults alike received shiny new Kinects. The Kinect itself is truly an impressive piece of technology, but Kinect games to date aren’t haven't exactly been synonymous with quality.
Excerpt: The Kinect looks good on paper but in theory, controllerless gaming still has a considerable way to go and unfortunately many developers have created some rather un-inspirational and not very entertaining games for this system. There's still only a handful of Kinect titles that are any good.
Conclusion: Winter Stars is yet another addition to the alarmingly large and growing catalogue of Kinect shovelware currently available, giving Microsoft's device an exceedingly bad rap. There's some potential here, but it's marred by sloppy execution, a naff career mode and gameplay that just isn't fun or engaging in any way. You'd be better off skiing over a snowy precipice into a bottomless crevice than face playing Winter Stars for any length of time.
Excerpt: For sheer exhilaration, few things match zipping down a snow-covered mountain at top speed. But somehow, Winter Stars mucks it up. This winter-sports game lets you compete in 11 activities: snowboarding, figure skating, curling, bobsled, biathlon, paraskiing, snowmobile, downhill skiing, freeride skiing, ski flying, and short-track.
Pros: + Storyline adds context for the various events in career mode., + Shiny, bright, colorful visuals with pretty snowscapes.
Cons: ? Were the voice actors trying to rival the epically bad movie
