Summary: " Wheelman " is a really great concept that has been let down quite badly by some obvious budget cuts. The face that there are only 2 licensed cars means that they stand out, whilst the selection of generic cars is too small. The music is poor and there is no multiplayer. It’s also pretty short when compared to most open world games. However, the core racing and combat is a blast, and the special moves are just fantastic. The story itself is also pretty reasonable.
Excerpt: First Impressions My reaction is When I heard that Vin Diesel was starting up a games development company, I braced myself for the worst. But I was pleasantly surprised by the company’s efforts in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and with the follow up Assault on Dark Athena close on its heels, it was beginning to look like we could expect great thing from Vin Diesel’s company.
Conclusion: This game is actually a lot of fun while it lasts, but the missions soon begin to blend into one another and the side missions are just not that entertaining. The on foot sections of the game are frankly dire, but if you are after a few hours of fun you could do much worse than lose yourself in this.
Conclusion: Quite frankly, we’re as stunned as you are. Just take one look at that box, that exploitable genre, that celebrity-endorsed title; everything about Wheelman screams disaster, except the game itself.
Conclusion: Of course, you'd be remiss to create a game featuring Vin Diesel if you didn't actually get to properly use him, so you're not always going to be driving in Wheelman. There are some very cool over-the-top action actions , such as leaping from your wrecked vehicle to the rooftop of one in front of you to hijack it.
Pros: Solid game engine with plenty of vehicular action, Incredibly destructible environments, Car Combat is a great new gameplay mechanic, Visuals work well, Plenty to discover with more than 30 story missions and over 100 side missions
Cons: On-foot third-person sections are terrible, Scripting, dialogue and story leave much to be desired, Soundtrack is grating after awhile, Massive list of story missions and side missions can get a bit much
Excerpt: Maybe it is too much to ask, but I genuinely look for games that are capable of shifting my attitude towards a genre or subject. Oddly enough, Vin Diesel stars in two recent games that are diametrically opposed in this regard. The first is the updated (which comes with the campaign too) and it is uniformly fantastic. It may not have aged as well as a fine wine, but it is a shining example of what the first person shooter genre is capable of when it branches out.
Conclusion: The Wheelman is een mix van Driver, Grand Theft Auto & Burnout.
