Universe at War: Earth Assault

True achievements

  • Conclusion: If you have a PC, I HIGHLY recommend it, if you want to see what the Westwood guys are doing now. If you get the 360 version, you may see some unwelcome framerate dips and wonky controls, and I'd recommend Kane's Wrath, Red Alert 3, or Halo Wars over this, but you'll still get a solid experience nonetheless.

Simple real time strategy with dull campaign.

Common Sense Media
4 August 2008
  • Summary: Parents need to know that this game is a solid strategy title for teens. Most of the violence -- which involves lasers, guns, and explosive devices -- is seen from afar. Most of the enemies are robots, so you won't see any blood. While there's some swearing, the language is pretty mild, although that could change if you play online.

Xbox Evolved

  • Summary: Overall the result is an enjoyable real-time strategy game. Universe at War: Earth Assault comes recommended even if just as a rental, you’ll find yourself enjoying the game though it’s not one that will set any groundbreaking records due to the slip ups mentioned. Though not reaching full and expected potential it ranks very close to doing so. Once again the ladies and gentlemen at Petroglyph haven’t disappointed consumers.
  • Pros: Exceptionally varied factions make for some unusual and fun battles
  • Cons: Some mediocre missions and poor storytelling drag down the campaign along with framerate issues.

  • Excerpt: The Good : Cool graphics; three races have VERY unique units; funny, campy storyline The Bad : Short, poorly designed single player campaign; camera is way to close to the battlefield; inflexible enemy AI The Ugly : $50/year for multiplayer My friends, there’s a war going on, and I’m not talking about Universe at War. Allow me to explain.

  • Excerpt: How many times has it been said that a real-time strategy game simply will not work on a console? There have been many a valiant effort – Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars gave gamers a brief glimpse of what could be achieved – but for the most part, the genre leap from PC to console just hasn’t had the desired effect.

  • Excerpt: Brought to you by some of the developers involved with the lovingly campy Command & Conquer games, Universe at War: Earth Assault doesn't quite match C&C's kitschy real-time strategy (RTS) shtick, though its gameplay mechanics and interesting mix of races does offer an engaging, albeit wildly unbalanced take on the whole RTS thing.
