The Lord of the Rings: Conquest (X360) - Review

VGChartz
15 March 2009
  • Excerpt: Of all the major book series' which arduously make the voyage from novels to films and even to videogames, Lord of the Rings is probably the most notable. As a videogame series, it has seen varying types of games with varying success. The series has included hack and slash, RTS, and even RPG titles. Lord of the Rings: Conquest falls into the hack and slash category, while having the play mechanics of the Star Wars: Battlefront games.

Lord of the Rings: Conquest

The Armchair Empire

  • Conclusion: class each bring different skills to the fight, with each possessing a powered-up “special” such as a flaming sword for the warrior or a three-arrow shot by the archer. Lord of the Rings: Conquest effectively gives gamers an epic sense to each battle, which is broken up into smaller objectives before a final resolution.

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Square-Go

  • Excerpt: With the movie trilogy long finished for six years, you might wonder why a game that allows you to recreate all the iconic battles from the films has come along so late in the day. Gandalf only knows…It may be beyond fashionably late, but the title brings some neat tricks to the table that Tolkien fans will undoubtedly enjoy.

  • Excerpt: In The Lord of the Rings: Conquest you’ll relive the epic battles from Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, opening with the defense of Helm’s Deep and culminating in the final battle at The Black Gate. When you successfully complete the campaign you’ll unlock an all-new “Evil” campaign that presents a “what if” scenario, that being what if the Nazgûl resurrected the Witch King who was then able to kill Frodo before he could destroy the One Ring?

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Game Over Online

  • Excerpt: Star Wars: Battlefront minus the blasters. That’s a pretty accurate summary of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, though I don’t think my editor would approve of me turning in a six-word review. It’s not surprising the two games are so similar considering Pandemic Studios developed them both.

Lord of the Rings: Conquest Review

“Break it Down” Blog
3 February 2009
  • Excerpt: Summary [6.5 out of 10] The Lord of the Rings Conquest is an action game created by Pandemic Studios. It is essentially Star Wars: Battlefront but set in the Lord of the Rings universe. You can play as either the side of good or evil. The good story line follows the plot of the movies, but the evil story line is newly created and is focused on Sauron stopping the Ring from being destroyed and then destroying all of the forces of  good.

  • Summary: There’s no excuse for such a buggy mess of a game, Peter Jackson should be very upset.

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

gamervision.com
23 January 2009
  • Excerpt: Name: Lord of the Rings: Conquest Genre: Action Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 (Reviewed on Xbox 360) Combining the frenetic gameplay of the Star Wars: Battlefront series with the characters, weapons and locations from the Lord of the Rings universe sounds like a perfect fit.  Capturing spawn points, defending strategic locations and utilizing on-foot and vehicular combat against countless enemy hordes should be a thrill for fans of the mythology as well as action...

Lord of the Rings Conquest UK Review

IGN
16 January 2009
  • Conclusion: In the end, then, Conquest offers much sound and fury but little substance. In terms of presentation and design, it does a pretty good job of evoking the rich universe of Middle Earth, as imagined by Peter Jackson. But the single-player campaign is rudimentary and brief and the multiplayer modes are fairly few, and they lack any real strategic depth, making it unlikely that anybody beyond the hardcore few will stick with them for the long-term.
