John Woo Presents: Stranglehold Xbox 360 Review (Second Opinion)
2 June 2010
Excerpt: Forget Chuck Norris. A bold statement, I know. But compared to Tequilla Yuen, the smart-talking, bullet-dodging death-machine cop of the Hard Boiled Hong Kong action movie, Chuck Norris looks like a wimp. Directed by action legend John Woo, Chow Yun Fat was Inspector ‘Tequila’ Yuen, a cop with more lives than the most careful of cats, more bullets than blood and harder than nails.
Excerpt: It's been a few years now since Quake 4 was released, and about a year since the decidedly average Battlefield 2142 underwhelmed gamers worldwide. id Software and Splash Damage have teamed up to try and deliver not only an online shooter that out- Battlefield s BF2142 , but also to add another worthy game in the legendary Quake series.
Summary: A spiritual sequel to Woo's action masterpiece, Hard Boiled, Stranglehold allows gamers to play a John Woo-directed action blockbuster movie. Dual-wielding and stunt-laden gunplay combined with massive destructible environments ensures that Stranglehold will be a true tour-de-force.
Excerpt: If you're like me, you've played boatloads of action games. From Nazi-killing vampires to Mafia hitmen to scientists with no voice, we've done them all. We've handled countless arsenals, almost all of which consist of, at the very least, a pistol, shotgun, submachine gun, assault rifle, sniper rifle, grenades, and a rocket launcher. We've seen the same stereotypical action game crap go on over and over. We're jaded.
Conclusion: In a nutshell, it's safe to say that with Stranglehold, you will be getting exactly what you paid for: over-the-top arcade action with a Hong Kong twist and trademark Woo choreography. As such, the game is great. On the other hand, there is only so much you can do with what you got here, and Stranglehold, although very good, is neither technically nor in any other way, able to pass that threshold and achieve excellence.
Pros: Fast-paced, seamless and nicely choreographed action, destructible environments, special shooting modes, John Woo touches;
Cons: Camera issues, very good game with clear limitations.
Excerpt: The master martial arts choreographer arrives on the XBox 360 that is aptly titled Jon Woo presents Stranglehold, based on the movie with the same name. The title is your classic first person shooter meets the Matrix as gamers control Inspector Tequila Yuen (Chow Yun-Fat), a deadly Hong Kong cop who is caught amidst two warring Triad gangs in the Hong Kong criminal underworld.
