Sonic the Fighters

True achievements
6 January 2013
  • Conclusion: For example Street Fighter has a perfect match achievement, or a no lose achievement. You won’t find that in this game. You can seriously get all of the trophies in one or two play sessions, by just running through Arcade mode. They consist of just beating the stages on any difficulty. That’s right, any difficulty.

Sonic the Fighters

  • Excerpt: Definitely the most obscure Model 2 fighter Sega’s ported to XBLA, this 1996 arcade game featuring the famous hedgehog actually began life as a character modeler from AM2 goofing off in the Fighting Vipers engine; eventually, it ballooned into its own game. The developers clearly had a great time making it: the characters and backgrounds have a cartoony quality to them that was rarely seen in 3D games at the time (and is still fairly uncommon), with limbs and bodies that...
  • Pros: + Cute visuals with charming squash-and-stretch effects., + Includes characters cut from the game’s original release.

Sonic the Fighters

Defunct Games

  • Summary: Sonic the Fighters finally gets a proper U.S. release. This Model 2 rarity may not make for the deepest fighting game, but it's overflowing with charm. The graphics are colorful and the stages are straight out of the classic 2D franchise. Best of all, this is one fighting game you probably haven't played before! This product was submitted by the publisher for review. As a rule, Defunct Games does not review games we spent money on.

  • Conclusion: Given that it was never that good begin with, it was sadly inevitable that Sonic the Fighters would come up short now, especially given the rather barebones nature of the conversion. Sonic fans and AM2 aficionados may be able to derive some sense of enjoyment from its novelty, but everyone else would be much better off looking at Virtua Fighter 2 or Fighting Vipers if you want some bargain basement old school Sega fighting action.

Sonic: The Fighters
