Silent Hill Downpour

Game Over Online
1 September 2012
  • Excerpt: Silent Hill has been struggling to recapture its success for the better part of a decade, with most of the installments after Silent Hill 3 feeling like failed experiments at bringing the franchise back to its former glory. Downpour is a chance for the series to return to its roots, and to do what The Room, Origins, Shattered Memories, and Homecoming could not.

Silent Hill: Downpour

xboxachievements.com
13 April 2012
  • Conclusion: Silent Hill: Downpour is a solid game with a typically twisted story underneath all of the pretence. Still the gameplay mechanics are starting to show their age and there is a lack of genuine shocks and intrigue, it feels like familiar ground, albeit fairly well made familiar ground. This is certainly an upturn for the series but it hasn’t yet gotten back to the giddy heights of its predecessors.

  • Excerpt: Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here . You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. Vatra Games understands Silent Hill. Downpour , for the first time since Team Silent left the franchise in 2004, gets it right. It’s important that protagonist Murphy is only a man.
  • Pros: Moments of brilliant manipulation of the game world, and the player, Process of revelation of Murphy's past and psyche
  • Cons: Exploration isn't especially deep, The game offers explanations more quickly than during the franchise's golden age

Expert Review

Game Over Online
29 March 2012
  • Excerpt: Whereas the last game, Homecoming, was more combat heavy, Downpour takes the confidence that comes with being able to easily dodge, attack, and move somewhat gracefully, and gives you the decidedly less agile Murphy Pendleton. You can still block, dodge, and use light and strong attacks, but the response time is much slower.

(Xbox 360 Review) Silent Hill: Downpour

The Entertainment Depot
27 March 2012
  • Summary: Silent Hill: Downpour has myriad problems, but in nearly every case, the design manages to shine despite the many technical hang-ups. On balance, the game works best when it’s a mixture of Titus Andronicus and Jacob’s Ladder , whether it’s during a story revelation or one of the many engaging side quests, and much less so as a generic hack-and-slash horror.

Silent Hill: Downpour Review

Games Abyss
19 March 2012
  • Conclusion: With six endings and plenty of side quests, Silent Hill: Downpour has enough to keeps players walking the path of Murphy again and again. Just don't expect any fun weapons to unlock like a laser pistol or a chainsaw.
  • Pros: Downpour's level of fun is purely found in its exploration aspects, never before has running around Silent Hill been so entertaining. Every landmark offers new things to discover and mysteries to unravel.
  • Cons: Poor monster designs and clumsy combat are enough to make even the most hardered fans think twice. A lack of a New Game + when it is sorely needed and occasional framerate hiccups and stalls make Downpour doubly questionable.
