Pros & Cons

  • powerful new weapons, more thrilling destruction opportunities, mindless destruction, tons you can do, nothing beats a sledgehammer
  • no multiplayer vehicles, workable but floaty vehicles, no matchmaking locale settings, lack lustre ai, ai is pretty shabby

Strategic destruction takes center stage in the Red Faction: Guerrilla - Smasher Pack . This DLC for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 adds 8 new Wrecking Crew maps along with a new mode: Behemoth. The new mode focuses on using walker vehicles to inflict as much destruction as possible before handing off the controller to the next player. Jump behind the controls of any one of the three Walkers, demolish large towers and structures, then sit back and witness the devastating …

Red Faction Guerilla

Red Faction Guerilla is a third-person shooter video game developed by Volition, Inc. and published by THQ. Red Faction: Guerrilla takes place in 2128. The game centers on the player assuming the role of Alec Mason who rebels against the EDF (Earth Defense Force) which were allies in the original "Red Faction" that has become the main antagonist of Guerrilla. The game takes place on the planet Mars, with other locations such as the Ultor labs, a feature that is homage to the first Red Faction game. The EDF turns to kidnapping and using forced labor in their work camps to attain profit. The character of Alec Mason is a former miner who avenges his brother’s murder and has become a part of the newly re-formed Red Faction. The game features single-player and multiplayer modes and has a rating of ESRB: M, PEGI: 16+ and USK: 18.

Features

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a game that features a third person perspective which is a departure from the first person perspective used in the two previous Red Faction games. Players assume the role of Alec Mason, and are given the ability to run, jump, hijack vehicles, and use weapons. The game is set across Mars in Mason’s fight against the EDF (Earth Defense Force). Players can choose from a cache of weapons such as machine gun turrets, rocket turrets, remote charges, a sledgehammer, and machine guns to use. There are also special weapons, such as the “Grinder”, a improvised weapon that launches charged blades at enemies and objects; a "reconstructor" which is a multiplayer-only weapon that rebuilds destroyed structures and the "Ostrich Hammer" which is an Ostrich being used as a sledgehammer. The game features over 30 vehicles (APCs, a 6 wheeler cargo truck, a walking construction mech, a tank, etc.), a radio function where other characters in the game can give the player information, objective and orders indicator via a HUD and GPS device, and integrated cover system and dedicated “backpack" with different functions (such as healing powers, invisibility as well as X-ray vision) during multiplayer mode. The game also features up to 6 online multiplayer modes (on single-player levels, with up to 16 players on a server) as well as an offline game mode called Wrecking Crew. The final version of the game may also include modes called Team Anarchy and a Capture The Flag Style in its Team DeathMatch games.

Guerrilla is the surprise summer blockbuster this year, filled to the brim with gaming superlatives and free of any pretentiousness or doubt as to what it wants to be. Volition have quite possibly made the best straight sandbox action game of this generation. And who knows, perhaps they knew that too. Read more

In spite of some minor AI and balancing issues, Red Faction: Guerrilla is one of the best action/adventure games out right now. In addition to great performance, amazing stability (not a single crash!) and a very polished single-player campaign, Red Faction: Guerrilla also has an absurdly fun destruction-only mode called "Wrecking Crew" where you and your friends take turns making as big a mess as you can within a set time period. If you'd prefer destroying your friends... Read more

In all, one of Red Faction: Guerrilla’s biggest strengths is that it’s simply a lot of fun to play. Smart design decisions such as the minimal impact of death (which will happen) are of great benefit in achieving this goal. As well, some of the larger structures will have you reloading and destroying it again and again, just to see how many ways you can bring a bridge or building to its knees. A very solid single player offering, expansive multiplayer modes, and an... Read more

There is no doubting that Red Faction Guerrilla has it’s flaws but these are far outweighed by the impressive qualities which the game possesses and the sheer wow factor of the level of destruction. Read more

Rarely has a game that focuses so completely on a single design aspect been as much fun to play as Red Faction: Guerrilla. Volition takes the mayhem and destruction that is central to the Red Faction series and ratchets it up to a whole new level in Red faction: Guerrilla. The destruction is realistic, ever-present, and changes the game from just another open world action game into an extremely enjoyable venture into the world of a Martian revolutionary. In Red Faction:... Red Faction Guerrilla is a grear 3rd person shooter based in the setting of Mars. I know it may seem a bit far out but bear with it because it's got quite an interesting story. You go to Mars to work only to find that the way they run things up there is a little heavy handed to say the least. During an uprising of the workers, your brother dies at the hands of those in charge up there and so this is the motivation needed for you to join the resistance and bring power to... Read more

This is a really late review. This game came out in 2009, and to be honest I forgot I had bought it. The reason for this is the game is utterly forgetable. Nothing new here. This is a 3rd person sandbox shooter that takes place on mars. The major problems I have with the game is how boring it is. I played it heavy for about a week when I got it. Then, I just quit playing it and it's been sitting on a shelf collecting dust unbeaten and unplayed for five or six months.... Read more

First off, this is a great game! Its a definite rent, and a buy for those looking for a game to keep them occupied for quite some time. It took me about 8 hours to beat the single player, but I stuck with doing the main missions only. There are around "50" or more submissions throughout the game you can complete, which could easily add another 8 hours of gameplay. The world is vast, and full of areas to explore. I have NO complaints about this game and it is easily one... Read more
