Excerpt: Every so often there is a game that comes in that takes us by storm. Every so often there is a game that becomes all the rage here at Family Friendly Gaming. Every so often a game comes along that grabs us and will not let go. Quarrel is one of those games. Quarrel is that every so often. Family Friendly Gaming was blessed with a download code for this game on the Xbox 360.
Conclusion: You are given control of these little creatures and depending on the number in your possession on each of your tiles or opponents tiles, is what determines the highest number of letters you can use for your words in any certain 'battle' that tile is involved in. Overall, this game is pretty fun and gives fairly easy achievements that for the most part are just time consuming.
Excerpt: If you attack or defend well there’s a chance that you’ll take prisoners, and it feels great when you do. It’s especially crushing when it happens to you, but that serves as extra motivation to make good words and make them quickly. Quarrel matches are fairly quick, and if you can’t find anybody online, there are a number of offline modes that are good fun as well.
Pros: Easy to grasp rules, always something to do even when not in combat
Cons: As with all multiplayer games, this one will be a lot less fun when the community moves on
Excerpt: “So... you want to review Quarrel? It’s a word game. As if there could be any other answer than, “of course. That’s how this grown in a lab, mutant masterpiece dropped into my lap.
Pros: + Risk meets Scrabble, + Colorful art with amusing characters, + Menu xylophone
Conclusion: As good as it is, there's little chance of Quarrel's hybrid gameplay converting anyone without a taste for cerebral action, but hardly the point. A great game is a great game regardless of genre and Quarrel, bar a few quibbles over whether words really exist ('SAVOURLY'? 'PHREAKED'? Really?), fits the bill nicely thanks to its clever mix of concepts. Just be warned though, we've got a word IQ of 194... you really don't want to mess with us.
Conclusion: Quarrel is one of the more unique Xbox Live titles of late, mixing anagram solving and turn based strategy that is a neat little combination. Though if you are not much of a wordsmith then prepare to be challenged.
