  • Excerpt: had split up to form three separate Dallas-based development teams, and many people blamed Microsoft for the closure of the studio. But apparently, most of the people involved in this split actually agreed to it, and now Robot Entertainment has released the first game out of the ashes of Ensemble.

  • Excerpt: Tower defense games have somewhat surprisingly populated PSN and Xbox Live with downloadable offerings for the past several years. Games like Comet Crash frankly are some of the best that you can find in a generally PC-dominated genre. Enter Robot Entertainment and their latest product: Orcs Must Die.

  • Excerpt: Tower defense games are like McDonald’s restaurants: they’re everywhere and are all fundamentally the same. Large groups of bad guys seek long convoluted ways to travel from the entrance to the exit, and only the proper placement of varying battlements will prevent that from happening. And, fundamentally, Orcs Must Die! doesn’t stray from the formula too far. The major difference between this game and many of the others lies with its intensity.

Orcs Must Die!

Total Xbox
14 October 2011
  • Excerpt: Hundreds of orcs, kobolds, and other horrid specimens stampede toward the glowing blue rifts between worlds. Can your fledgling War Mage stop them? Fortunately, Orcs gives you plenty of ways to halt enemy tides. Crossbow and bladestaff prove handy, but the machinery you summon onto floors, walls, and ceilings rends flesh with industrial efficiency.
  • Pros: + Pleasing mix of third-person action and tower defense; lots of traps, upgrades, and monsters., + Something new unlocks with each level; sharp and colorful critters; silly voiceovers.
  • Cons: ? Who do we talk to about getting a hobgoblin Avatar pet?

Orcs Must Die!

GameTrailers
13 October 2011
  • Excerpt: At this point there are few genres being exploited as much as tower defense. For every horde mode tack-on there are three re-skinned or rehashed tower defense releases. The line between the two is starting to blur, and that continues with the fantasy-based Orcs Must Die! Playing as a sorcerer’s apprentice, it’s your job to wipe out the scores of moist minions storming the castle. Like all successful games of its ilk, Orcs Must Die!
