Summary: I had an original Xbox and loved NHL 2k5 and NHL 2k6, so when I bought an Xbox 360, I had to get the 2k version to play. I opted against 2k9, because reviews said the franchise system had a bug that caused the game to lock up and 2k Sports was not patching it (I only play franchise). While NHL 2k8 has everything I had with 2k5 and 2k6, they changed the controls. Now, you have to hit 2 buttons for a slap shot and it is much more difficult to control.
Summary: Although the controls of this game are very responsive and the visual crisp and clear. The overwhelming amount of advertisement and "realistic" elements were just too much for a relaxing game. Hyper-competitive or hardcore hockey fans would love this game though. Happy Gaming!
NHL 2K8 is an alright hockey game but if you are new to the series expect a steep learning curve

Excerpt: Now I would like to point out from the start that I am not a fan of ice hockey and I have never bought an ice hockey game before. I only bought NHL 2K8 as I was just looking for a really cheap game to play and I came across this. And on to the review... I found that the intial presentation of 2K8 was really quite poor. The main menu is not clear or easy to use, and it just gets irritating when trying to navigate through it.
Conclusion: Something about this just doesn't feel right - the skating feels loose and floaty, the character animation is poor, and the sound is a little strange. EA managed to get all of these things right, with better presentation and deeper gameplay, and it makes for a much better game.
