The leaves are turning to autumn colors to the north, the mornings are crisp and cool and all the kids are back in school. This can only mean 1 thing! It's time to lace up the skates, tape up the stick and head onto the frozen pond for some good old hockey action. The NHL kicks off in October and EA now brings us its latest edition of the NHL series with NHL 09. Read more

Last year, EA’s NHL 08 took home seven “sports game of the year” awards. In fact, I'm sure you picked up on that tidbit of information somewhere along the way because it has continuously been shoved down gamers' throats. (It's even on the NHL 09 box art this year!) But after such a well-revered title, how did EA Canada take it to the next level?
- Online team play is great., Beautiful looking/sounding game., New defensive additions.
- No user-customized control schemes., Needs better franchise/online leagues., More customization and sliders.

- "Be a Pro" mode is an addictive blast; online experience is greatly improved; six-on-six play; same great action as last year.
- Not many on-ice innovations; occasional framerate hiccups; online leagues can be troublesome for those of us without friends.

EA’s NHL series has been recreating the sport of Ice Hockey for 18 years now, and if you dislike the cold and the knocks that come with the real life sport, then EA have long offered this alternative method of playing the stick and puck sport, one which is not only safer, but can also be played in a warmer environment, that environment being the inside of your TV screen (it must get really boiling in there). With its beautiful presentation, broadcast-like feel, smooth control scheme, and innovative new online functions, NHL 09 is not only the best hockey title on the market, it may very well be the best of all-time. Simply, it seems that while EA has perfected their brand of hockey simulation, 2K is still trying to figure things out, and NHL 09 is simply too big of an entity to compete with. Read more
