Compared to NHL 08, NHL 09 adds two great modes that may very well change the way you play the game both offline and online, which makes this a must buy for anyone that wanted better utilization of the team play that appeared in last year’s game. The EASHL is one of the coolest online modes to come around since league play, which is hopefully something that becomes a standard for the other sports games to adopt and make their own. There are some rough edges to work out... Read more

Last year, EA’s NHL 08 took home seven “sports game of the year” awards. In fact, I'm sure you picked up on that tidbit of information somewhere along the way because it has continuously been shoved down gamers' throats. (It's even on the NHL 09 box art this year!) But after such a well-revered title, how did EA Canada take it to the next level? Read more

Finally, you can always reject the in-depth controls and switch to an old fashioned two-button cheat-o-scheme that, while completely unfair in multiplayer, proves NHL 09 always puts fun before pedantry. Read more

It wasn't about the ice spraying his face like knives and it sure wasn't the blood dripping down punch-stunned lips. But Mark Messier said it all. In "Messier," New York Times writer Jeff Z. Klein's potent biography about the hockey great, Messier and Wayne Gretzky momentarily muse about what makes the two want to go out on the ice, day after day, year after year. For Gretsky, it was simply to have fun with the guys. For Messier, it was deeper: It was about giving... Read more

The NHL is tough. Teams take upwards of 40 or 50 shots at a goalie on a good night, and maybe ten actually go through? Usually less. Chalk it up to a combination of human error and the mound of man-shaped padding between the puck and the goal. You don’t have to be a pro to play NHL 09 but it couldn’t hurt - players are weighing in on the Internet with message board posts named “HARD AS HELL”. But though a few blocked shots may get your blood boiling, don’t... Read more

NHL 09 is by far my most favourite hockey game around and for many reasons! As soon as the game starts you have to create your own be a pro player which will be with you on Xbox live and on Be a Pro Mode. The key features of the game are: Franchise mode- where you take your team to the top and play as the GM and the whole team Be a pro mode- This is where you play as your be a pro character and you have to start in the low of the AHL but play well and you will move up to... NHL 09 is arguably one of the best sports games. The graphics are great, the gameplay options make for a new experience unlike any other game out there. Be a pro mode allows players to create a player and go through an entire career and the skills of your character are rated after each game and your ratings with the team and general manager depends on how well you play. There are also online dynasties (which I haven't really tried out.., but it is great for those who... Read more

Fun: The game is really fun to play, and the NHL 94 controls makes it accessible to nearly anyone. The reason I only give 4 stars to a game that deserves 5 stars is that I found commentaries less immersive than it used to be. In terms of great in-game commentaries for sport games, the best that exists today is NBA 2K9. For ice hockey specifically, commentaries were great in ..... NHL 2001, much better than NHL 09 or 06. NHL 09 is awesome!! I own every NHL game from 2000 on, and this one is easily the best one yet! Be A Pro mode is unbelievable, it can get boring after a while, but its quite the step up and they can improve on it for a long time. The new checking and fighting engine in this game is awesome! its so funny when you come in at 100MPH after the whistle and drill a guy's face into the glass.I think the only con to this game is the announcers, they get so annoying after a...
