Conclusion: For every time you feel like the guy that only gets into the game if there is a blowout when playing NCAA 08 March Madness , there’s usually an equally satisfying moment that makes you wish time would warp ahead four months. Take the seventy classic NCCA teams that have been put into motion for NCAA 08 March Madness .
Excerpt: College hoops have been an enjoyable pastime of mine for years, primarily due to a decent basketball program back in my college days. Ive been let down in the past by video adaptations of my favorite sport, but EAs March Madness 08 looked like a decent effort at recapturing my attention. Typical to EAs history with the title, the presentation of March Madness is top notch and does an excellent job of capturing the enthusiastic college spirit.
Summary: Parents need to know that this basketball game features scores of college teams from around the country in realistic action. Players will be exposed to some in-game ads, and examples of unsportsmanlike behavior in excessive celebration upon scoring, taunting of other teams, and delivering rough fouls. However, the game really focuses on the on-court play.
Excerpt: Let’s face it. When a publisher puts out yearly updates for a half-dozen different sports franchises, expecting a whole new experience with each subsequent release is unrealistic. But one thing EA tends to do a good job with is offering up enough new features to at least keep the core fanbase satisfied year in and year out. NCAA 08 March Madness is no different. There was a time when online leagues were a pretty exciting feature.
Excerpt: If you asked any basketball oriented person in this country what is the best time of year to watch basketball, there wouldn’t be many to not say the month of March. There isn’t much else that can compare to “The Big Dance.” It is the one time that the impossible is possible, the “nobody’s” become the “somebody’s,” and until that final buzzer, nothing is out of reach.
Excerpt: It’s human nature to sugarcoat the negative in a situation no matter how strongly we feel about it. That bad movie that “had a good soundtrack.” That awful song that “had a nice beat.” Or, perhaps the most famous of them all, “she has a good personality.” Maybe we go through life with blinders on or perhaps we’re just nice people at heart. Most of the time people try to look at the bright side of almost any situation.
Conclusion: You can't argue with the results of EA's focus on revamping 08's post play, and some people will really dig the inclusion of a large number of classic teams (with short shorts), but it's really a shame the developer didn't spend a little more time addressing the little nagging issues. These are what's keeping the game from reaching its full potential.
Pros: New post moves work great, Improved interface makes dynasty mode more enjoyable, Does a nice job capturing the college atmosphere.
Cons: Gameplay is sloooooow, A large number of small nagging issues really bring down the gameplay, Lack of real team schedules and inability to alter sim length are big oversights in dynasty mode.
Summary: NCAA March Madness 08 is a frustrating game because it really should have been good. The developer got a lot right, such as a new low-post game, an improved interface, and online leagues. But for every improvement, there seems to be a problem to cancel it out. And it's not just small problems, either. The gameplay is incredibly sluggish, the ball physics are off, teams don't have their real schedules, and the frame rate is downright terrible on the PlayStation 3.
