  • Conclusion: For all the above criticisms, there is something strangely compelling about Mercs 2, but I suspect that's the psychological pull of an open-world map with lots of untapped activities rather than anything more substantial. As soon as you realise that each of those glowing dots inevitably leads to the same tired action, the draw to explore becomes non-existent. There is room for a Mercenaries-flavoured experience in the gaming canon, but this isn't it.

True achievements
17 December 2008
  • Conclusion: Bad things aside having all the factions, HVT's, building to destroy and challenges makes the game last for quite a long time providing you can stand the flaws to play it that long or feel like going for all the achievements. The story/side mission are great but the physics and the way the game runs isn't so good and quite annoying.

  • Excerpt: Oh no you didn’t! Chances are if you own a television you will have seen the Mercenaries 2 advert and are already familiar with the song this line is from. Incidentally, it also perfectly sums up some poorly-realised elements in what is a mixed bag of frenetic highs and lows which don’t quite deliver what’s expected from a modern title.

  • Excerpt: EA’s new title Mercenaries 2: World In Flames is the sequel to the amazing and groundbreaking first Mercenaries, which was on the original XBOX.  The first Mercenaries was special because it did the massive open world gameplay in which you could basically destroy everything, with great graphics and even a good storyline. I know EA have been working on Mercenaries 2 with Pandemic for a long time, years and years, so I did have high hopes for the game.

  • Conclusion: Now we all know there are countless GTA clones out there, such as Saint's Row, Crackdown or similar games. But at least they offered a few cool concepts of their own. So, to cut a long story short, Pandemic gives us a game rather unworthy of its predecessor; which means fans are bound to be disappointed (if there still are any). On top of that, Mercs 2 simply doesn't have what it takes to compete with today's top shooters.
  • Pros: Online co-op, impressive-looking explosions, vehicles and weapons are enjoyable as is blowing stuff up;
  • Cons: Generally uninteresting gameplay, feeble story, dumb AI, technically flawed, mediocre in every conceivable way.

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: A big brash bully of an open world shooter which rarely shines. Diverting for a couple of hours perhaps, but for the same price you could bag yourself a trio of superior efforts like critical darling Crackdown. Better luck next time, Pandemic.
