Summary: Parents need to know that this game features controls that may be too complex for younger players. The gameplay is pretty much like real professional football; players control some hard tackles and they have the option to try illegal moves like holding, although they may have to face the penalties. The game has ads for real-life companies, a soundtrack with licensed songs, and it promotes the National Football League.
Excerpt: How American Football has got its name is beyond us, it’s a sport that isn’t played in conjunction with the ball and a persons feet too often, so it’s a rather silly and empty name. In other parts of the world there’s a game that you may have heard of where the players actually do kick a ball around, which is very fitting of the word “Football”. Our point being? Well, it’s just something this writer wanted to get off his chest.
Summary: I never could have imagined the football genre to be in this much disarray. It wasn’t so long ago that NFL fans had their choice from Madden, NFL 2K, Blitz, and Gameday. Money ultimately led to the end of that, and now Madden is all that we have left.
There is good news and there is bad news for the future of football games. The bad news being that for at least the next year, gamers are without a football game that has much good worth.
Excerpt: If you’re new to Madden on next generation consoles, coming to the PS3 without a stop on the Xbox 360 along the way, then you’re in for some surprises. Madden NFL 07 on the PS3 is not the PS2 version of the game with prettier graphics, but pretty much a whole new game. If you’ve played the Xbox 360 version of the game, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Excerpt: I always know Madden has been released, not by the review copy that arrives at my doorstep, nor the messages left by my editor asking me to review the game; No, I know Madden has been released when all of my friends magically appear outside my apartment with boxes of pizza, bags full of chips, and more beer than I can hold in my pint-sized fridge (one of my friends thought ahead and brought an extra cooler - good thinking mate).
Excerpt: Old Man Madden is now approaching instalment number 20 as far as the American Football games go, and the constantly evolving series is back in 2006 for another punt with the prophetically-titled Madden NFL 2007. That's about as 'future' as this game gets, however, with the gameplay pretty much left alone from last time (nothing wrong with that) and just a sprinkling of new features added to the modern Madden experience.
Summary: Madden 07 is the first Madden game in years that I feel I can actually recommend. There are some serious flaws that need to be addressed, especially the problems in Superstar mode and the lack of Owner mode, but the addition of Superstar mode in and of itself as well as Gamer Levels and a higher level of polish than I've seen in this series in years makes Madden 07 a football game that fans will love despite its flaws.
