Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
13 February 2012
Conclusion: The gameplay mechanics are there, but the essence and soul of a true RPG, is absent. The world is beautiful, but somehow feels like you've been there before. Whether this is because the art style draws inspiration from Blizzard's Warcraft universe or Lionhead Studios' Fable, or something else, we don't know. Maybe it's just because of the incredible amount of generic content and the dreary story.
Pros: Explore to your heart's content, you'll find many cool things, from cool weapons and items, to God knows what else, great art, beautiful sound and terrific music, the freedom to tailor a character to your preference, fun and challenging combat;
Cons: Simply going through bland action RPG mechanics, the main story needs more subtlety, absence of difficult moral choices that have serious consequences, quests need more variation, most of the tasks feel pointless and downright dull.
Summary: Reckoning is built on a great concept that highlights the dynamic nature of game narratives, but unfortunately, it is a victim of its own ambition and fails to capitalize on many of its own big ideas.
Pros: Excellent combat design, Interesting world, Great story set-up
Cons: Turgid storytelling, Little variety in combat scenarios, Distinct lack of polish
