Excerpt: Just like a factory assembly line, Activision pumps out yet another movie based game just in time for its big screen debut. Next up, Twentieth Century Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I was fortunate, or unfortunate depending on how you look at it, to review the Xbox 360 version of the game. Having played many Activision movie based games over the past couple of years I have learned to keep my expectations realistic and take the game for what it is worth.
Conclusion: It will not take very long to finish this game, unless you are particularly uncoordinated or a child (or both, which my son is and he struggled but he'll be two soon, by which time i would expect him to have got the hang of it!) Gloriously exceeds very low expectations to be a solid, but unspectacular game. Felt the same when i finished as i did after Kung Fu Panda, which is no bad thing.
Conclusion: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a straight-forward childrens release that doesnt push the envelope in any way. Its a by-the-numbers movie-to-game title that offers little in terms of surprise, virtually no challenge, and ultimately is a forgettable experience. The multiplayer modes and collectables will keep kids entertained longer than they should be, and because of that Id say this one at least deserves a rent if you have kids who loved the film.
Summary: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is an action-adventure game based on the third movie in the franchise. It's a humorous, kid-friendly romp through the pre-historic period, featuring plenty of colourful characters in a wide range of game styles including action, platforming, shooting and racing. Its simple gameplay is unlikely to hold the attentions of experienced players, but young folks and fans of the movie should be quite satisfied.
Pros: Varied gameplay, Genuine laugh out loud moments, Great voice acting from the original movie cast, Authentic character animation
Cons: Only one very easy difficulty level, Weak multiplayer
Conclusion: A pleasing adaptation of a family-favorite franchise. All around good fun and despite the short length, there is plenty of extras to come back to. Not exactly a blockbuster title, but a nice addition to a child's catalogue for sure. The older crowd can at least appreciate it for a bit of fun and an easy gamerscore boost.
