Excerpt: Realism. It’s what defines modern gaming… less and less whimsical 2D platformers, more and more hardcore 3D shooters set in the Middle East. Every year, we expect a technological leap forward in detailed graphics, believable sound, and immersive control, all in the pursuit of realism. Then a game like I Am Alive comes along, gives us a gritty taste of true realism, and reminds us why rule-bending escapism is easier.
Pros: Extra realism. Extra intensity, A hauntingly believable story of survival, Strategizing every fight and every climb
Cons: Extra realism. Extra dying, Enough brown to choke on, The innovative too quickly becomes the familiar
Conclusion: I Am Alive is neither a terrible nor a great game. It had the potential to be a better game than it is, but that’s not to say it’s not worth a spin. Despite my major complaints about a flat storyline and poor layout for saves, the game is definitely worth $15 if you enjoy action games with the ability to strategize your way through things instead of button mash.
Summary: I Am Alive, like its world-weary protagonist, has had a hard and troubled journey, and it shows. It's truly disappointing what I Am Alive ended up becoming, especially because it had so much potential
Pros: Traversing devastated metropolises is always welcomed, Great sense of progression through grim world
Cons: Looks and feels incomplete, Intimidation mechanic never really evolves, Is hamstrung by original concept's prospects
Conclusion: Summary: Good -Realistic post-apocalyptic game. -Interesting features for an arcade game. -Fantastic use of transparent graphics. Bad -Combat is restricted to quick time events. -Underrated sound effects. -Should be a full retail. Overall I think that this is a great game with much to offer. I give it an overall score 8/10. Would be better if it had zombies in it.
Conclusion: The whole 'world coming to an end' thing is a great setting for a game and it really does work for I Am Alive, but its downfall comes as soon as you started to navigating the rubble - things just become very frustrating, very quickly. It could have been a much more enjoyable experience and it's such a shame that it hasn't lived up to what it could have been (not to mention the whole thing finishing with one of the most bullshit endings of all video-game time...).
Excerpt: Wrought with a troubled development cycle, I Am Alive earned its name before it was even available to download. It was passed between teams in mid-development, and the game’s actual nature, and even distribution model, remained ever elusive. Whatever you pictured the game would be, I’ll wager the final product is somehow simultaneously more conventional, more unique, and more heartbreakingly flawed. The story spends little time setting up the premise.
Conclusion: I can’t even begin to describe how much I tried to like this game. Countless times I sat there and knew exactly what the developers were trying to achieve. Whether it was a faint cry for help leading me to frantically try to discover its source or those fleeting moments when I identified with a desperate man forced to take desperate measures to survive in a very different world, I could clearly see Ubisoft Shanghai’s intentions.
Excerpt: Efter katastrofen.
