Summary: I’m going to come right out and say it: Guitar Hero: Van Halen is the worst Guitar Hero so far. The song list is poor, the presentation is lackluster, and there is very little here to justify Van Halen getting their own game at all, let alone a full priced $60 release. As a free bonus for buying Guitar Hero 5 at launch, GH: Van Halen got the job done. As a full priced game, however, it is unacceptable. Find out all of the details here in our full review.
Excerpt: It’s time to don your 80’s mullet, Lycra pants and trusty wireless guitar whilst rocking out to some of the seminal hits of the hair rock era with Guitar Hero Van Halen. Yes that button bashing cash cow Guitar Hero returns with another collection from a band willing to sell their souls for a few bucks; this time it’s Van Halen, rooting through their back catalogue to pick some of their greatest hits.
Excerpt: We’d been grooving up ’til now — Guitar Hero 5 threw down a bunch of party-ready features, and The Beatles: Rock Band redefined the single-artist experience. But unlike those innovative headliners, Guitar Hero: Van Halen makes no significant contribution to the genre — and no, the short stack of new songs doesn’t count. Really, the game seems like it’s cool with coasting by on the good faith of Guitar Hero aficionados.
Pros: + Van Halen's a perfect fit for the Guitar Hero series.
Cons: - Missing Guitar Hero 5 upgrades; light on bonus content., - Other bands here have no real connection to Van Halen., ? Roth or Hagar? The game already decided for you.
Excerpt: JUMP! For this game Oh no, not another Guitar Hero game. I bet you my weekly wage packet that the very utterance of my opening line reverberated around many households and game stores upon announcement and visualisation of it hitting retailers. In fact, as I write this Red Octane will be shutting down and even Activision themselves, may have admitted that this long standing successful brand maybe losing its appeal.

Excerpt: Guitar Hero; Van Halen joins the ranks of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Metallica as the next Guitar Hero installment that focuses on a particular band. Having played all the renditions of both Guitar Hero and Rockband on the Xbox 360, it is hard to mask my initial disappointment at Van Halen .
