GTA has become one of the most successful gaming series in history despite all the negative press that is guaranteed to come with every new launch. So why all the hype? What makes this new edition to the GTA universe one of the most in depth and immersive games currently available? Attention to detail? Knowing what mature gamers want? Tons of hidden extras? Well told storyline?

  • Excerpt: Grand Theft Auto IV (GTAIV) is easily the most widely acclaimed game of this console generation, having the highest Metacritic scores for any game on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms, including perfect scores from IGN, GameSpot, Game Informer, G4 TV, 1Up and so forth. However, this is an occasion when critical acclaim does not directly translate into fun.

Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360 Review

Console Obsession
30 May 2010
  • Excerpt: Those expecting a radical overhaul will likely be let down by the latest game in the money making Grand Theft Auto series. Things have been changed for the better and others for the worse, although the misleadingly titled fourth game in the series is still the equivalent of a very familiar face in a massive crowd. This time you take control of an Eastern European immigrant who sets his foot on American soil at the start of the game.

Grand Theft Auto IV Review

IGN Entertainment

  • Conclusion: Going back to the phone for a minute, this is your seamless entry into the multiplayer modes of the game. GTA IV features fifteen modes that you’ve probably already heard about, including standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch types, as well as racing and the more GTA-centric Cops ’n Crooks mode.

Murder, sex, drugs, drunk driving. Not for kids.

Common Sense Media
4 March 2009
  • Summary: Parents need to know that this game isn't for kids in any way. This new version is as controversial as its predecessors, letting you lead a life of crime, shoot police officers, drink and drive, and have sex with prostitutes. It features pole dancers and lap dancers at a men's club and is laced with profane language that pushes the envelope (much of it peppered throughout the over 100 songs played on car radios in the game).

  • Conclusion: The animation was well thought out and developed. Occasionally a close-up scene was weak enough that you could see the rendering in the animation, but those didn’t occur too often. The musical scores are used to good dramatic effect, alternating at times between ominous and intense classical tracks to edgy modern riffs, and definitely provide additional foreshadowing.
