Fez Review

PlayDevil
16 July 2012
  • Summary: " Fez " is a weird one. It has a brilliant start, but unless you obsess over completion and getting 100% in a game, I found that some of the charm wore off, and the game had little lasting appeal beyond the first couple of hours. For dedicated puzzlers though, this is still a great little game that is well worth the price of admission, even if, like Braid, some of the magic has been lost thanks to the plethora of guides now available online.

  • Conclusion: Okay so it’s got its buggy hiccups but personally I love the fact that I still haven’t cracked everything Fez has to offer. I’m always going to shy away from the longevity sapping solutions of the internet, because now I have a complex little corker nestled in my XBLA collection that offers a decent year or so worth of an expiry date.

  • Excerpt: I’m frankly pretty happy that I write for a website that doesn’t run news stories. The day that Phil Fish made his now infamous broad-stroke comments about Japanese games (“they suck”) was the day that I realized that reading comments on news stories is hazardous to my health. Fuck that Phil Fish guy! He’s racist and dumb and his game probably sucks anyway! Not that I’m defending him, really.

  • Conclusion: Fez is an interesting animal, as Gomez’s quest to seek out the Cubes needed to repair the Hexahedron becomes ancillary once you start collecting Anti-Cubes. Normally, satisfaction from a game like this would involve figuring out how to access hard to reach Cubits by manipulating objects and perspectives in a clever way. Instead, the real thrill comes from code breaking. Who cares if you got a hard to reach Cube. Did you find out what the symbols on the totems mean?

Fez Review

GamerNode
30 April 2012
  • Summary: Is Fez a puzzle game? Is it a platform game? Is it a nostalgia trip? Does the absence of reactive challenge mean it’s even a game at all? I guess that all depends on your perspective. Fez isn’t the first game to use perspective as its central mechanic, but a pleasant fusion of this and its retro aesthetic makes it unique. Wandering through its sprawling world is relaxing.
  • Pros: Vibrant retro aesthetic, Clever uses of central mechanic, Overarching puzzle is a doozy
  • Cons: Some will not appreciate the lack of challenge, Confusing map, Handful of visual bugs

Game Review - Fez

Game.ie
24 April 2012
  • Summary: For the longest time, indie title Fez was better known for it’s ponderously protracted development cycle than anything else. The game was first announced by creator Phil Fish a very long time ago in July 2007. For reference, the first Transformers was riding high in cinemas, Uncharted hadn't debuted and the world had yet to suffer the indignity of Twilight .
