Earth Defense Force 2017 Review
9 February 2008
Conclusion: Some would say that Earth Defense Force 2017 would benefit from having a larger budget and, in turn, higher production values. But I’m not so sure. Part of what is so incredibly endearing about this game is that it’s so technically abhorrent. You’ll feel like you’re playing something from Xbox Live Arcade, but the fun factor is where EDF 2017 makes the leap to a standalone title.
Excerpt: To start with, this game can barely be categorized as "next-gen"; the characters all look the same (including your generic uniformed defender dude, who has no name). There aren't any outrageous or flashy animations. The graphics are sometimes nice, and other times not so nice (like when you take down an enormous UFO ship and it passes through the ground as if by magic). Most of the graphical glitches are fairly obvious, and show that this is indeed a budget title.
Summary: Well the price is certainly a factor in deciding an overall score. At full price this would be ridiculed and mocked, a dodgy frame rate and animation alongside some awful voice acting does not help matters. However, based on gameplay alone this game is great and if you like no-nonsense shooters like Serious Sam then you’ll love this. If not then by now you’ll have decided this isn’t for you anyway, and besides it wasn’t made for people who want a serious game.
