Earth Defense Force 2017 PS Vita Review

AtomicGamer
16 January 2013
  • Excerpt: When I first heard that D3 Publisher planned to port the years-old action RPG Earth Defense Force 2017 to Vita, I really didn't understand the point, but now I'm kind of glad they did it. The publisher has always been a great source for interesting, but quirky Japanese titles, but there was something unique about EDF 2017 as it came to US audiences and Xbox 360s at just the right time with a brand of action-RPG gameplay that was a rare find on consoles.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Review

IGN Entertainment
9 February 2008
  • Conclusion: Some would say that Earth Defense Force 2017 would benefit from having a larger budget and, in turn, higher production values. But I’m not so sure. Part of what is so incredibly endearing about this game is that it’s so technically abhorrent. You’ll feel like you’re playing something from Xbox Live Arcade, but the fun factor is where EDF 2017 makes the leap to a standalone title.

  • Excerpt: To start with, this game can barely be categorized as "next-gen"; the characters all look the same (including your generic uniformed defender dude, who has no name). There aren't any outrageous or flashy animations. The graphics are sometimes nice, and other times not so nice (like when you take down an enormous UFO ship and it passes through the ground as if by magic). Most of the graphical glitches are fairly obvious, and show that this is indeed a budget title.

Earth Defense Force 2017 (Xbox 360)

The Review Busters
5 August 2007
  • Conclusion: Earth Defense Force 2017 is the best kept secret on the Xbox 360. Some Xbox 360 users might be turned off with the lack of Xbox Live features but with a game that can be as addictive as Halo how can you say no? Whenever you do play this game just make sure you don't play too long, the loading time in-between some levels may annoying you a lot, plus some of the enemy AI in this game can lead to some extra minutes in certain wide area stages.

  • Conclusion: While EDF most certainly won’t win any gaming awards, they also don’t have a category for “Most Enjoyable” which is truly a shame, because this could have a great shot at the title.

Earth Defense Force 2017

Saving Progress
20 July 2007
  • Conclusion: From the first time you shoot a rocket launcher at a skyscraper crawling in giant red ants and it falls to earth, killing the insects that inhabited it, you’ll be sold on Earth Defense Force 2017. It succeeds in a world where gameplay is king, and piss-poor presentation is completely acceptable in some cases.
