Don King Presents: Prizefighter Review

A mediocre fighter -- suffers from poor controls.

  • Summary: Parents need to know that this is a fighting game, so don't be surprised if there's violence and blood. It's not out of context, of course, and doesn't include weapons. Suggestive themes relate to sexy videos of women who try to tempt the boxer to come over for a good time. Players make decisions in the game, such as whether or not to take narcotics (in the form of a text message, but allegedly there's a related video too).

Don King Presents: Prizefighter

GamersHell.com
7 November 2008
  • Excerpt: Boxing, a sport of fisticuffs-brutality, cunning strategy and skillful maneuverability. We've seen the sport portrayed through games in various ways ranging from pure arcade button-mashing to the more recent precision-oriented simulators. The current favorite, reigning from EA Sports' camp, Fight Night, hasn't had much competition, but 2K Sports' Venom Games—who aren't strangers to virtual boxing with two previous Rocky games under their belts—delivers a new challenger...

  • Conclusion: There's a strange inconsistency at the heart of Prizefighter. On the one hand it has great presentation, an interesting roster of fighters and a storyline that references classic boxing mythology. It's all designed to appeal to real boxing fans – mention Ken Norton or Larry Holmes to someone with a casual interest in boxing and they'll stare at you blankly. And yet, once Prizefighter gets in the ring, it becomes an awkward, clumsy arcade game.

  • Conclusion: Overall, Prizefighter is a solid boxing game. The game's lack of taunts and illegal blows make it more of a heavy boxing simulation as opposed to Fight Night's arcade-focused fighting system. Right now, a demo is out on Xbox Live, and it might be a good time for you to go for sparring and get familiar with the mechanics, before heading out to buy the game and getting your teeth knocked out in one or two rounds.

  • Excerpt: Ok so I just recently bought Halo 2 for the XBox 360 to see what all the insane craze over the Halo franchise has been about for all these years. I’m up to the part of the game where you are the arbitor and have fought past the flood to get to the library on Halo to get the key… you remember that part? Yea, that’s right, the exact same thing you did in Halo 1… how inventive.

Don King presents: Prizefighter Review

VideoGamer.com

  • Excerpt: When I saw Prizefighter earlier this year there was a lot to be impressed by. By using a documentary style 2K Sports and developer Venom Games had created something that looked pretty unique - a sports game with a proper story. We hadn't gone hands-on with the game though, which was worrying, but we were happy to give the game the benefit of the doubt.

True achievements

  • Conclusion: All in all Prizefighter is not a good game and falls a long way short of the quality of the Fight Night series. For those who love boxing titles the career is a interesting journey but is still dogged by the lacklustre fighting so even for the most hardened of fans of the sport, this is probably one to give a miss.
