Dirt 3 Review

DailyGame

  • Excerpt: Rally is a sport that fascinates me, purely out of the danger aspect not only for the drivers and their navigators, but also for the fans. How many other spectator sports can you stand a couple of feet away from the action involving 500+ horsepower as the vehicles careen around dusty potholes corners and slide on icy straight-aways with nothing but a plastic rope or a small tree between them.

Dirt 3

  • Conclusion: Dirt 3 is overall a thoroughly impressive beast, both creatively and technically that will surely please most fans of the series. Whilst the Gymkhana remains divisive, the more familiar components of the Dirt experience continue to be entertaining. The handling model has been refined, the environmental effects are second to none, and the inclusion of Gymkhana all add up to a memorable experience.

  • Excerpt: . If you have ever felt the desire to race in the L.A. Coliseum, the Rocky Mountains or the deepest part’s of Kenya, but found you didn’t have the money, time or courage to do so -- no worries. Codemasters is going to give you an opportunity to do so in a much cheaper, safer environment. And the developers will give you that opportunity all while delivering an incredibly realistic and fun experience.

DiRT 3

  • Conclusion: Some of the game's imperfections are not enough to overshadow the fact that DiRT 3 is still a fine racing game worthy of anyone's attention, even those who are not familiar with the genre and have never tried racers before. There are numerous events to take part in and a solid number of tracks and cars on offer to keep you occupied with the single-player, while it's also likely you'll spend a lot of time with the game's multiplayer modes.
  • Pros: A challenging and beautiful racing game that can easily reel in a wider audience more than any of the previous installments, improved physics, more emphasis on tracks with tarmac, fun multiplayer;
  • Cons: It preserves its predecessor's teenage-style simplicity a bit more than it should and appeals less to those who always appreciated the hardcore image of the CMR series, some minor visual bugs (we emphasize the word 'minor'), the YouTube feature isn't all it's cracked up to be, voice acting's a bit annoying in this one, we would have appreciated more locations (such as Japan, UK, Spain, France, Italy, etc.).

Expert Review

Game Over Online
31 May 2011
  • Excerpt: DiRT 3 is largely more of what series vets have come to expect, with tons of rally races, rally cross, and new things like gymkhana that are basically obstacle courses with drifting, donut, fast spin and gate crasher areas that take you from one thing to another in rapid succession.

DiRT 3

Game Over Online
31 May 2011
  • Excerpt: The DiRT series has continued the tradition of the original Colin McCrae series marvelously while also featuring some of the most impressive menus in gaming. The first entry had sleek menus, while the second had a realistic festival setup and now, they’ve gone with an unfolding triangle structure for them that carries over into the now-triangular race ladders and tons of upside-down Triforces for logos throughout the game.

Dirt 3

AV Club

  • Excerpt: The words “off-road racing” and “conservative” seldom appear in the same sentence, but that’s Dirt 3 in a high-octane nutshell. It bucks the conventions not just of its genre brethren, but also of previous entries: There are fewer vehicles (though thy garage will still runneth over) and also dramatically fewer event types. As a result, the “Dirt Tour,” or single-player campaign, is a more focused experience, though a less varied one that eventually loses momentum.

  • Excerpt: Gymkhana: The best reason to not waste your gaming dollars on DiRT 3. Codemasters did a spectacular job with DiRT 3 - the menus are all nicely done, drivability through most game modes rival that of console-exclusive titles (and in some cases outdoes them), accessibility options are present and accounted for, and there are a few minor snags the game runs into here and there, but all of that goes away possibly within the first eight races of the DiRT 3’s DiRT TOUR.
