Conclusion: Gamers who think they have the nerve to play a terrifying game in the middle of the night, with the lights off, should give Condemned a try. If anyone manages to play this one in a dark room without jumping out of their seats or looking over their shoulder, has nerves of steel. Condemned is a great effort and easily the best looking first-person melee game we’ve ever seen.
Conclusion: A short single player game and a non-existent multiplayer means you could potentially knock this game out in a weekend, if not a single day. Clever achievements provide some incentive to revisit the game but a completely linear story means there is little or no reason to replay the campaign rather than to get both endings, though the Propaganda Reports do add slightly to the experience.
Excerpt: While it’s interesting to play your favorite sports game or a cool shooter on your 360 just because the graphics are much improved, this hasn’t stopped some developers from creating exclusive titles that aren’t ports. One such release is Condemned: Criminal Origins, which puts you in the shoes of agent Ethan Thomas in his struggle against the FBI, strange addicts, and himself.
Excerpt: There are far and few games that manage to give me the creep out factor or actually engage me enough in the game to actually both look forth and to dread what may lie around the next corner. Condemned Criminal Origins is one of those games. A game that has the esteemed and at the same time, hard reputation to live up to, of being one the first waves of games for what has been deemed the next generation of gaming.
Excerpt: When was the last time a videogame scared you? Before playing Condemned: Criminal Origins , I had to think back to playing Resident Evil 2 on the PSOne and that, I tried to convice myself, was just a matter of being unprepared. While playing Condemned , I vowed it wouldn't scare me. I had all the lights on, the volume wasn't turned up too high, and the fact that I was playing a game was going to keep me from being scared. It didn't work.
Excerpt: Condemned is the first, and so far, only horror game available for the Xbox 360. Veteran PC developers Monolith went on a big horror kick, with two separate teams making F.E.A.R. for the PC and Condemned for the 360. While my thoughts on F.E.A.R. are well-documented, I'll say that I enjoyed Condemned quite a bit more.
Excerpt: Monolith, the team that revolutionized action-horror in this year's PC release, F.E.A.R., brings their haunting environments, hard-core gameplay, and refined graphical design to the XBox 360 in one of the most psychologically ruthless games ever made, Condemned: Criminal Origins. The combat can get repetitive, but the chilling environments are fun to explore, and the story keeps you sufficiently disturbed.
