The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (Xbox 360)

ccgr.org
4 July 2013
  • Excerpt: In 2004, right around the same time that everyone in the gaming industry had seemingly lost hope for movie tie-in games, “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” hit the original Xbox. Unlike many games related to movies, where the player is asked to play through the events of the film itself, “Riddick” asked players to play a prologue of sorts to the films that had starred the character, Richard B. Riddick.

  • Excerpt: Vin Diesel returns to remind you why you should fear the dark. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was originally released for the original Xbox and acts as an extension of the story of Riddick from Pitch Black. The original is often held up as one of the best movie tie-in games of all time and for good reason. Mainly because it was good.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Xbox 360 Review

Console Obsession
29 May 2010
  • Excerpt: The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay will always be remembered as one of those rare treats: a film licence that didn’t seem rushed. When it was released way back in 2004, it was actually a licensed game that was better received than its source material . Now, in 2009, Starbreeze Studios hasn’t only polished up the original game, but they’ve also created an entirely new campaign to play through.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Review

IGN Entertainment
11 March 2010
  • Conclusion: Overall the story feels complete, though there isn’t quite the same level of character interaction that enriched the experience of the first game. Assault on Dark Athena is much more about the action, with a few easy environmental puzzles to overcome. It’s a natural sequel, keeping the look and themes intact. Makes sense, because the team at developer Starbreeze has remained largely unchanged.

Review – The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

videolamer
4 December 2009
  • Conclusion: In short, Assault on Dark Athena is painful. By the numbers. Even when you have an easy time of it, it feels like the game is trying to punish you for something. If I had to take a guess as to what happened, I would say that Starbreeze had different priorities than I anticipated. The Dark Athena disc includes a multiplayer segment, in addition to Butcher Bay remade for the 360.

  • Conclusion: The finest first-person shooter experience since Bioshock. It is a great pity that so many people will pass this game by.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Review

VideoGamer.com
15 July 2009
  • Excerpt: When presented with the choice of two games, 2004's Escape from Butcher Bay and 2009's Assault on Dark Athena, only one thing ran through our mind: how has it been five years since Riddick dazzled on the Xbox? At the time Starbreeze's first-person action game was a technical marvel, doing things with the Xbox that didn't seem possible.

Graphic, gory first-person shooter with some sexual themes.

Common Sense Media
15 July 2009
  • Summary: Parents need to know that this game was created for adult players. The "Mature" rating warns of excessive violence and gore -- and there is plenty of it -- as well as foul language and sexual references and imagery. This game is not appropriate for kids, tweens, or young teens.

Video Game Generation

  • Summary: Posted: 2009-07-10 10:04:05 PST
  • Pros: Continuation of the popular, Riddick, saga, which has many fans., The original full version of, Escape From Butcher Bay, is included!, Decent stealth-action if you're looking for that sort of thing.
  • Cons: Too much darkness! Riddick is great with the dark, but, come on, Graphics are not as impressive for their time as they were in the previous game., The game becomes far too linear at times and focuses far too much on stealth., Lackluster multiplayer modes.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Auracore MediaWorks
6 July 2009
  • Summary: Riddick has come to the next-gen in all his shadow cloaked, bloody weapon glory.
  • Pros: The original Escape from Butcher Bay remastered; splendid mix of stealth and action; interactions with other prisoners is interesting; stealth kills are intense.
  • Cons: Dark Athena is a real weak point; gunplay isn't the greatest especially in gun oriented segments; melee combat is still kind of lopsided against you.
