Call of Juarez: The Cartel review

GamesRadar
24 June 2012
  • Pros: Heroes' hidden agendas are a nice touch, Competitive elements make co-op more fun, Gets a little better in its final chapters
  • Cons: Looks unpolished to the point of hideousness, Mediocre voice acting and terrible combat banter, Wastes great ideas on a mediocre-at-best shooter

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

Game Vortex
23 September 2011
  • Excerpt: Save for a few novel ideas, Call of Juarez: The Cartel is, by far, the fledgling franchise's worst installment in nearly every possible way. The visuals are no exception. The first thing you'll notice is the amazingly ugly pixelated grey font the developers have chosen for the user interface.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

Thunderbolt Games
16 September 2011
  • Excerpt: We’ve heard it before and we’ll hear it again. The Wild West no longer has the appeal it once had. Standoffs at noon and grizzled gunslingers have been replaced by more modern conventions, and videogames have followed this trend, preferring the new school over the old. Still, exceptions exist, and in the case of the Call of Juarez series, the Wild West has taken centre stage. Except, strangely, in this latest instalment.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

Cheat Happens
7 August 2011
  • Excerpt: They say you don't try to fix what's not broken. Apparently though, the team at Techland, the development studio behind the Call of Juarez series have never heard that saying. Rather than sticking with the Wild West theme that has served the franchise so well, the studio chose to move into more modern times and tell the story of drug cartels in Mexico.

Call of Juarez the Cartel

impulsegamer
1 August 2011
  • Excerpt: Call of Juarez: The Cartel is the sequel to a title that had small following, providing  a decent first person shooter in a Western setting, move forward to the release of the current title and we see a shift from what set Call of Juarez apart from other shooters.  That’s right; Call of Juarez is now set in modern times, which is disappointing for those wanting to have some old style Western shootouts.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

Game Boyz
27 July 2011
  • Excerpt: When Call of Juarez arrived on the Xbox 360 in 2007 many praised the game for its storyline and slick visuals; however, many criticized the game for its performance issues and some lackluster character modeling. Just over two years later a prequel arrived, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, and it generated some positive reviews but it was criticized for its technical glitches and for some of the gameplay which fell outside its typical western shooter roots.

Review: Call of Juarez: The Cartel (360/PS3)

GamePro.com
20 July 2011
  • Excerpt: A by-the-books shooter from beginning to end, Call of Juarez: The Cartel swaps the Wild West setting and interesting characters of its predecessors to become a stale, but serviceable, shoot-'em-up.
  • Pros: Can co-op through the main campaign; parts where you get to shoot stuff aren't bad.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

Auracore MediaWorks
20 July 2011
  • Summary: The Cartel has some good ideas, but fails to execute any of them well.
  • Pros: Interesting co-op mechanics; fast-paced Objective multiplayer mode.
  • Cons: Low production values; intermittent framerate stuttering; low-quality graphics; poor pacing; linear and repetitive level design.
