Excerpt: I don't know where it went wrong. I remember hearing the pitch for Blacklight: Tango Down and being genuinely interested about this cyber-dystopian shooter. Sure, the bleak sci-fi setting isn't exactly original, but when it's done right (ex. Deus Ex ), it is usually great. Unfortunately for Blacklight , it does not afford the luxury of having the time to set up its rich world before asking gamers to drop fifteen dollars on a multiplayer only affair.
Excerpt: There are more than a few shooter titles to choose from these days, some might even say they are in excess. Each of these games promises a one-of-a-kind experience in hopes of separating itself from the rest of the pack. Blacklight is one of these games; it promises to not only have the visuals and polished gameplay of its retail siblings, it also aims to match the amount of content found in full retail shooters. In some places it succeeds, in others, not so much.
Excerpt: In some places it succeeds, in others, not so much. For an arcade title, Tango Down has a healthy amount of content; the only problem is the “single player” experience, dubbed Black Ops, is far from great. A weak to non-existent story hurts the experience overall, but the addition of cooperative play is a huge bonus. I’m the type of gamer that enjoys playing with a friend in games like this, rather than against them.
Blacklight Review: A Strong Battle Plan Undermined By Poor Execution
7 July 2010
Conclusion: Concept: Deliver a fully featured multiplayer experience, but forget to inject the fun
Graphics: Impressive Unreal Engine 3 generated environments, but the soldiers move with a minimal animation set. The ugly, confusing menus look like they are ripped out of a ‘90s Konami game
Sound: Your standard generic cacophony of gunfire, soldier chatter, and explosions
Playability: This fast and furious combat features a competent control scheme, but the jumpy aiming mechanic and...
Conclusion: This game over all doesn’t really bring anything new or innovative as far as FPS titles go. Everything in it has been done elsewhere, and has probably been done better. Though if you push that aside and focus on its price tag, it’s actually a pretty decent title for the price. So if you want a nice cheap online only shooter to dominate, I recommend this game to you. Just avoid getting it on Games for Windows. Get it on Xbox 360 or Steam instead.
Pros: Nice and cheap. Plenty of customisation with the weapons. Graphically nice.
Cons: Player base on Games for Window. Laggy. Modern Warfare Syndrome. Nothing new being added to the FPS genre.
