Altered Beast

Altered Beast is a 1988 arcade game developed and manufactured by Sega that has been developed for the Xbox 360 in 2009 with high definition support, online leaderboards and network play. The game has since been then adapted to several home video game consoles and home computers. The Xbox game is now being developed by Backbone Entertainment and is published by Sega for the Xbox 360 game console. Altered Beast is a side scrolling, platform, beat 'em up game where gamers are in control of a dead centurion who is a shape-shifter that comes back to life after being raised to rescue Zeus' daughter, Athena. The game pits gamers against the undead and demonic hordes and features several levels.

Features

During game play in Altered Beast, gamers can collect the Spirit Balls, which is dropped by white two-headed wolves (blue oxes in the DOS version) to increase strength and transform into a variety of mythical creatures with powerful attacks. The transition take place in three stages: stage one where the character turns into a giant, stage two where he becomes superman and state three (after the third ball is collected), the hero transforms into a beast with exceptional abilities. The gamer then battles armies of fictional and undead creatures to defeat the evil Demon God Neff, who is holding Athena captive. The game contains several levels which the player must battle through, with each level ending with a ‘boss’ that must be defeated. The bosses at the end of each level are Neff himself in different forms. The enemies encountered differ in each level, as does the beast the hero transforms into. These beasts include a werewolf, a thunder dragon, a tiger man, a bear, and the golden werewolf. Each beast has its own special abilities, such as the dragon's ability to fly. There are small cut scenes between each level to forward the storyline of Athena's peril. Upon Neff's defeat in the city of Dis at the completion of the game, Zeus thanks the player for his help. The game has since then seen re-incarnations in the forms of Arcade, DOS, Amstrad CPC, MSX, NES, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis, PC Engine CD, Commodore 64, and Virtual Console since its 1988 inception. The game since then has allowed up to 2 players to play simultaneously. The Xbox version supports online leaderboards and network gameplay.
