Aliens: Colonial Marines Review

NowGamer

  • Summary: Aliens: Colonial Marines returns to LV426 looking for the James Cameron magic, but is Gearbox the 'state-of-the-badass-art' or mostly terrible... mostly.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Review

PlayDevil
28 February 2013
  • Summary: " Aliens: Colonial Marines " is a crushing disappointment, but it isn’t the absolute travesty that the media have made it out to be. I’m not sure if this is as a result of the week one patch, but I didn’t experience any of the bugs or glitches that seem to have affected other reviewers.

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Digital Chumps
12 February 2013
  • Conclusion: Aliens: Colonial Marines boasts one of the most iconic and evocative landscapes in cinema - but what's the use if there's nothing interesting to do there? If Colonial Marines were a film it would be one of those quiet indiscretions sent directly to video, but instead it's a game, one in which every interactive and visible aspect feels dated by any measure.

Aliens: Colonial Marines

12 February 2013
  • Excerpt: Has the Alien franchise become cursed when it comes to telling a good story? Released a full 27 years after the iconic film Aliens hit theaters, Colonial Marines is intended as the movie’s true sequel. Ignoring later Alien films (which some cinephiles won’t mind one bit), the not-too-scary campaign mode begins with a group of United States Colonial Marines investigating the USS Sulaco , the spaceship that transported the doomed marine contingent in Aliens to the planet...
  • Pros: + The superior multiplayer modes may be worth the cost of admission alone., + Cooperative mode lets you tackle the story campaign with up to three pals.
  • Cons: ? If Weyland-Yutani had its own strike team, why’d they send in the marines in the first place?

Aliens: Colonial Marines isn’t the Aliens sequel you wanted (review)

venturebeat.com
12 February 2013
  • Conclusion: The developers at Gearbox are clearly huge admirers of Aliens , but I fear that might have clouded their judgment. Colonial Marines comes off as too much fan service with few (if any) ideas of its own. It provides a tired narrative with an unsatisfactory conclusion that opens more questions than it attempts to answer. It too often tries to simply re-create memorable scenes and character interactions from the Alien films, much to its own detriment.
  • Pros: It’s mostly Aliens , all right … mostly Like Rebellion, the studio that created the first and most recent Aliens vs. Predator games, Gearbox gets many of the small details right with Colonial Marines. The click of the motion tracker, the blaze of the pulse rifle, and the hiss of a stalking alien — these seem straight out of Aliens . The heads-up display has that same low-resolution light blue text from the pilot monitors of the Sulaco , the spacecraft that brought the...
  • Cons: Colonial Marines is an uneven ride You begin on the Sephora , a United States Colonial Marine rescue ship sent to find out what happened to the team from Aliens . From there, you board the Sulaco , and things quickly go wrong for you and your fellow marines: an explosion, several dead bodies, and general confusion. You have to investigate something on your motion scanner, and along the way, xenos ambush your team. The narrative is off to an OK start, but things quickl...

“I’m afraid I have some bad news”- Aliens Colonial Marines Review

GamingTrend
14 August 2013
  • Excerpt: If you look at any top 100 movie list, universally and without fail you’ll see the James Cameron-fueled scarefest Aliens.  It represents the highest point in the franchise, it’s the go-to movie when you think about the series, and it has the most memorable characters, environments, and quotable lines.  To call it a deep pool of content from which to create an awesome game would be an understatement.
  • Pros: All movie-specific sounds are represented, Multiplayer is a lot of fun – we’ll see if it sticks, Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen lend authenticity to the game
  • Cons: Muddy graphics and bland textures across the board – clearly all released screenshots were from the PC version. (including the ones in this review!), Jagged shadows and lighting, Spastic and inconsistent voice work from supporting cast, Very dated gameplay mechanics, Poorly-placed challenges, No location-based damage that I can detect, AI is laughably dumb, How do I hold all of these goddamned helmets?!

Aliens: Colonial Marines Review

AusGamers
21 February 2013
  • Conclusion: Well actually, Doom had more atmosphere, an aspect killed in Colonial Marines by the decision to include a coop mode. Not to say the coop mode is bad, in fact it's fun, but playing solo and having one or more invincible colleagues by your side detracts from the tense and alone feeling that could otherwise be generated. It also makes the tracker obsolete, just hang behind a fellow soldier and wait for them to say something or start shooting.

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Techzine
4 February 2014
  • Cons: ..maar slaat snel om in een simpele shooter;, Grafisch niveau van een launchgame;, Korte, saaie singleplayer;, Glitches;
