  • Excerpt: Editor's Note: This review was written after playing only the single-player game for X-Men Legends on the Xbox. We write about video games, we don't have any friends. X-Men Legends was originally announced in early 2002 by Activision, but dropped off the radar for over a year and a half before re-surfacing after the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2003. Released in mid-September, X-Men Legends is Raven Software's most recent project.

  • Excerpt: With X-Men games dating back to the Commodore 64, its nice to see a license actually be put to good use, and X-men Legends does exactly that. With a group of characters with as much history, and such a loyal fan base as the X-Men have, its a wonder that after some of the shoddy games of the past, that anyone would want to dare to stretch the license to something beyond a 2D fighter, and I am happy to report that what weve got here fits the bill as a very fun and very...

X-Men Legends

  • Excerpt: Comic books would seem to be the perfect breeding ground for video games. After all, they have extremely detailed storylines with plenty of fleshed out characters and tons of action. Regrettably, history has not proven this to be the case, as plenty of horrendous titles have been produced with comic book tie-ins. Perhaps no one understands this better than X-Men fans, who’ve suffered through plenty of abysmal side scrolling and 3D action titles.

Game Over Online

  • Excerpt: Perhaps one of the strongest facets that sets Legends apart from previous titles is its extremely solid storyline. Composed by Man of Action, a four man team of former and current X-Men staff writers, the plot of Legends could’ve been ripped directly from Marvel’s pages. Set in the Ultimate X-Men Universe, Legends also draws heavily from other iterations of the series, primarily that of the Uncanny X-Men.

  • Conclusion: Lowdown X-Men: Legends is by far the best X-Men game ever released, it gives fans a closer look into the super-heroes they love. The AI really has some flaws and overall the representation of Legends being an RPG is misleading. Aside from these flaws X-Men: Legends has loads of replayablilty, customization and super awesome cast of X-Men and villains. The action is fast paced, and it's great with friends over.

  • Conclusion: Truth be told, if you’re looking for a dialogue intensive, thought provoking journey of introspection, you’re probably in the wrong place here, much like you would be if you fired up Dark Alliance. This is action roleplay, baby, which means it's simple, fast paced, and quite linear in that there is a major plot arc, and minor deviations from it are about as good as you’ll do. That said, there’s scope for lateral thinking in the X-Men Legends world.
  • Pros: “Plug in and play” gaming for visiting gamers, Excellent presentation, great air of authenticity, Great variety in attacks and special powers
  • Cons: Minimal “purist” role playing action, Limited voice acting
