Excerpt: TOCA Race Driver 2 is yet another racing game for the Xbox. Next to only FPS’, the Xbox is a bastion of driving titles, from Project Gotham to Rallisport Challenge 2. TOCA 2 is the newest addition to what is easily the strongest racing console in modern-day gaming history.
Conclusion: However we can't help but feel there's one huge omission from Race Driver 2, in the form of UK touring cars - the very aspect on which Codemasters' ToCA series was originally based. If the hugely popular UK ToCA races were to have to been included in Race Driver 2, we'd have had no hesitation to give it the full marks which it clearly deserves.
Excerpt: If you’ve played any of Codemasters’ TOCA series of titles in the past, you’ll know that regardless of the severe directional changes that each game seems to take, the titles themselves always stand up well in their own right and generally provide a solid gaming experience that is tough to equal. Pulling onto the starting grid, I was hoping that the same could be said for TOCA Race Driver 2 .I wasn’t to be disappointed.
Excerpt: Codemasters has really outdone themselves with the newest installment in the TOCA racing series, TOCA Race Driver 2. Many great and not so great racing titles have been released within the last few years, but none contained the excitement of this title. Instead of just racing cars, Codemasters added a story line to guide you through the available racing scenarios including Super Trucks, Stock Cars, Rally, and of course Performance Vehicles.
Conclusion: THE VERDICT: If you're done with Project Gotham Racing 2 and you're in the market for another driving game, TOCA Race Driver 2 might be just what you're looking for. While no part of the game revolutionizes the genre, for the most part everything is neatly taken care of. There's some sloppy gameplay here and there, but with the panoply of racing styles on offer that's inevitable.
Excerpt: Drive now! What? Look! Go, go, go! You’re in a Ford GT, the awesome sound of the engine rumbling away in the background. Pounding through the gears and hammering the throttle, you get the inside line and overtake your competitor. The adrenaline goes straight to your head and you focus on one thing; driving to win. ToCA Race Driver 2 catches you off guard. You fill in a profile name and are immediately thrown head first into the action.
Conclusion: I'm going to quit my list of gripes now as I've prattled on way too long. Reading back through it sounds like I don't rate TRD2 very highly - which is not the case - the game's problem is that although it attempts to supply racers with an incredible amount of variation, it really doesn't feel like it due to the floatyness of the handling and the lack of feedback from the joypad.
Pros: Plenty of cars and tracks., The best solo racing on Xbox., Slick frame rate., Xbox Live racing!
Cons: The career mode is a confused, simplistic and rather silly mess., The cut scenes are nicely done, but the story is banal and ultimately pointless., The Xbox live racing simply isn't as good as PGR2's.
Conclusion: It can't be easy to come in at second place year after year as the PES franchise has done since EA Sports' upped their game, but Konami hasn't taken it lying down. New features have been added to the roster and the core gameplay has been tweaked and prodded into shape, leaving us with at least a worthy contender for cup glory this year.
Pros: Controls are slick and intuitive once mastered, Online Master League could devour your free time, Wide variety of game modes
Cons: Menu system needs serious streamlining, Still too many unlicensed clubs
