The Suffering: Ties That Bind

Xbox Evolved
16 February 2006
  • Summary: The Suffering: Ties That Bind is a great action game due to it’s very enjoyable gameplay and interactive world, but lacks a prominent story that really ties everything together. Sure, the story is there and is pretty interesting, but the game just lays it out and presents the story rather poorly keeping you off balance and at times confused at what is going on.
  • Pros: Solid gameplay and impressive work on monsters.
  • Cons: Loses the original 'Suffering' atmosphere.

The Suffering: Ties That Bind

Game Over Online
24 October 2005
  • Excerpt: We’ve all been guilty of some mistake, a minor or major sin that we wind up having to atone for at some point. That’s simply being human, and whether it’s a mental correction or a painful lesson learned, we grow from the situation and have our conscience somewhat cleansed. But there are some people who are so tainted that their moral lapses will stick with them forever.

  • Excerpt: Ties That Bind picks up where the previous game left off, with Torque speeding away from Carnate Island and its supernaturally infested Abbott Penitentiary towards his hometown of Baltimore. Shooting, hacking and bludgeoning his way through an assortment of nightmarish monsters (and I'm not speaking about the inmates), Torque struggled to stay alive. Unfortunately for the escaped convict, the city isn't any safer than the island he's fled from.

  • Excerpt: Survival horror games have been coming out in droves lately, and the sequels and imitators that decent series spawn are making the whole genre seem washed up and a little boring. Midway realized this last year when the released the The Suffering, a no nonsense action horror game that ratcheted up the creepy factor by taking out deepest fears and turning them into some of the most bizarre and quite disturbing things seen in a game in a long while.

  • Conclusion: Horror fans are happy that we have another episode of crazy man Torque. Gamers who enjoyed the first game will find something to enjoy about Ties that Bind although it's not as brilliant as the first offering. Ties that Bind is cool, creepy and bloody, but it gets old fast. It's a rental for most, and a buy if you need your gun smoking, blood soaking fix.
