Excerpt: Serious Sam came from the unknown Croteam and became a cult hit among action loving PC gamers. It even spurned a semi-sequel, an Xbox port, and PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions of the game. Considering games have been becoming ever more complicated and life-like over the last few years, Sam's simplicity and non-stop action must have hit a cord amongst gamers, desperate for some pure, uncomplicated gaming action.
Summary: Serious Sam II is the type of first person shooter that reminds me of the good ol' days of gaming when you could just turn on the console (or put the money in the arcade machine) and start playing - no need to remember what happened last time you played, no need to keep your full attention on several things, just all-action fun gameplay.
Conclusion: Serious Sam II is a great game for what it is! Sam doesn't try to be all fancy and keeps us basic with a theory of "tape the finger to the controller and kill em' all". Because Sam's basic gameplay this one will get old fast, which a concern especially with the lack of multiplayer. I'd put Serious Sam II in the rent category. Although if the price is right, and you don't expect Halo this one a winner which will give you a few good hours of buzz.
Conclusion: Exploration to find the secrets spread around on each level soon gets exasperating too, as the use of invisible walls to hem you in gets on your wick, and who cares about a score at the end of a FPS level these days anyway? – haven’t games evolved beyond that? I reckon you’ll be hard pushed to find them all, and if you do , you deserve a medal (and probably need psychological help, or a new game).
Pros: Fast, frantic blasting action that gets better as it goes on, It’s quite a big game, The ‘giant’ section, Some um… “imaginative” enemies, System link and online co-op, Cheap
Cons: Lacks variety and thus gets old very quickly, Isn’t as funny as it wanted to be, Despite loads on-screen, the graphics fail to impress
Conclusion: When all is said and done Serious Sam II is a very old school shooter, back in the 90’s it could be classed as one of the best FPS available but in this day and age with the like of Halo 2, Half Life 2, F.E.A.R, Call of Duty and others on store shelves, Sam Stone looks very out of his depth. There is no doubt there is some nostalgic fun to be had during the course of the title but that’s all you get really.
Summary: Was tut ihr eigentlich gegen den alltäglichen Frust? Joggen im Wald? VHS-Kurse mit angstfreiem Klatschen auf Mallorca? Oder mal wieder den kleinen Bruder vertrimmen? Hey!
