Secret Weapons Over Normandy Review

IGN Entertainment
11 March 2010
  • Conclusion: There is no doubt that SWON is a capable arcade type simulation of what it was like to fly fighter planes in WWII. The question remains if people are willing to give up a less thematic dogfighter (Crimson Skies) for one with more authenticity in its presentation. If you do the comparison without considering online play, then I think SWON matches up fairly evenly with Crimson Skies except in the graphics department (Crimson=developed on the Xbox=better).

Secret Weapons Over Normandy

GamersHell.com
16 December 2003
  • Excerpt: Secret Weapons Over Normandy is an arcade flight combat game, designed by Lawrence Holland, the creator of Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and the X-Wing series. The game offers over 30 air-to-air and air-to-ground combat missions across the globe in epic WWII battles. And when they mean 'across the globe', they mean just that – you'll be fighting everywhere, from North Africa to Norway, and from Stalingrad to Sumatra.

  • Excerpt: SWON casts players in the role of James Chase, amateur barnstormer and pilot assigned to the Royal Air Force at the beginning of the war. Shortly after assisting the evacuation of British forces at Dunkirk, Chase gets enlisted into the Battle Hawks, a secret crack squad of fighter aces tasked with taking on Germany’s clandestine operations. Much of this will involve Germany’s feared Luftwaffe, the lightning fast air force of Hitler and their vaunted Nemesis squad.

Secret Weapons Over Normandy

Gamecell
19 October 2007
  • Conclusion: To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much from this game but it turned out to be my surprise hit of the year, it's fun and there are plenty of secret movies, planes and missions to unlock (and you can also go back and redo any mission you've completed to improve your standing). But I think some people will be put off by the game not being flight 'simmy' enough (Crimson Skies feels more like flying) and the repetitive nature of the missions.
  • Pros: Fun., Nice selection of planes., Very good sound.
  • Cons: Tad repetitive., Rubbish two player., Bit short once you master it.
