R: Racing Evolution

Game Over Online
23 February 2004
  • Excerpt: R: Racing Evolution is the latest in a long line of racing games developed by Namco. But this time around they’re offering something that fans of their previous efforts might not be expecting. This game attempts to blend the two arcade/simulation sub-genres into a single experience.

Game Over Online
23 February 2004
  • Excerpt: In traditional Namco style, R: Racing Evolution boasts a pretty interesting gameplay dynamic that could easily be considered a gimmick, but is nonetheless entertaining. What we’re referring to is the game’s unique spin on drafting: the pressure meter. When you are driving behind another racer, you will take advantage of his slipstream, allowing you to go faster.

R: Racing Evolution

Thunderbolt Games
19 February 2004
  • Excerpt: One of the first truly accurate arcade-to-console ports, the original Ridge Racer was undoubtedly the biggest racing title to be released during the PlayStationss early years. Because of the new cd-rom medium, the home version of the game was able to capture the same vivid graphics, slick opening movie and addictive techno/hip-hop soundtrack found in the arcade iteration.

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: R: Racing Evolution isn't the next Ridge Racer by any means but is certainly worth a look. While hardcore Gran Turismo fans looking for an enormous amount of cars and extensive tuning options may not find what they're looking for in R: Racing Evolution, that shouldn't stop casual fans from checking it out as there's plenty on offer here.

R: Racing Evolution Review

IGN Entertainment
8 December 2003
  • Conclusion: R: Racing Evolution is without a doubt the best of the Ridge Racer series, and its name suits it well as it has evolved to modern gaming. The only thing I fear is that due to their improvements in reality features of the game, the wrong sort of gamers will sit down with this title. R is an arcade racer and I’ve tried hard to stress that throughout our entire coverage. If gamers go in knowing this I think they will be pleasantly surprised and enjoy the game.

  • Conclusion: R: Racing Evolution has some great elements such as the communication between pit crew and the competition. R has some great innovative aspects such as the pressure meter and braking assistant. The story of a young girl embracing the masculine world of processional is a great base for a game. It sounds like a sure winner, but as I said earlier it's a shame about the actual racing and the lack of feeling in the speed department.
