Conclusion: VR-1 made a valiant effort with its first action/adventure game, but the game lacks long-term value or originality. Had there been better implementation of the in-game camera and battle sequences, the game would have had a better chance of showing what it had to offer. Overall Nightcaster is a good game, but a good arcade/action game, not a good RPG game.
Excerpt: If you’re looking for an RPG, the XBox doesn’t really have a lot to offer right now. One of the systems few games that offers anything close to an RPG experience is Nightcaster . Unfortunately, the game isn’t any good, so it doesn’t really help the XBox’s lineup any. One day while playing hide and seek with his friends, Arran, a young boy, stumbles upon a mysterious glowing orb.
Excerpt: Sometimes, we're a little slow here at GameCritics.com. Usually, we'll have a game reviewed shortly after its release, but occasionally our relatively small staff gets overwhelmed and overlooks a game. Hey, we do our best, but pobody's nerfect. Alert readers might notice that Nightcaster has been on store shelves for well over a year. Heck, the sequel is already out!
Conclusion: textures. It is not a game that is going to truly impress visually, but taken altogether the graphics pull the plow. Like so many developers in this generation, the Nightcaster crew apparently fell in love with lighting and particle effects, and they went completely overboard with them, a forgivable sin considering how well the XBox pulls these tricks off - but still, heavy combat occasionally starts to look like a Fourth of July fireworks show.
Excerpt: One of the most intriguing games I have been waiting for on the Xbox is NightCaster. Being a huge fan of Role Playing Games, I have been disappointed in the lack of good RPGs... or should I saw the lack of any RPGs... Since the Xbox I still without a single RPG in its lineup, it is safe to say that I will play any game that has some similarity to the RPG genre. While NightCaster isn't a Role Playing Game, it is the closest you will find to one on the Xbox.
Summary: "Most creatures that come after you will keep coming and coming even after you kill them as they tend to have nests called "Spawners" so the only way to stop them coming back again and again is to take out the Spawner." "At first, controlling Nightcaster felt like it might be a nightmare of its own, you move Arran around the levels via the left thumbstick, the right thumbstick when moved releases your orb and switches the game into a top down view"
Pros: Cool Spells, Solid Framerate, Nice control system
Cons: Repetitive, Poor story, Why is there a 3rd person mode?
