Conclusion: The NBA Live series appears to be fully back on track with their latest effort. The game does have several shortcomings, including incredibly tough computer defense, a few glitches in the dynasty mode, and some overly long animations that affect gameplay, but all in all NBA Live 2004 is the best game of the series. Those looking for online hard court action will have to look elsewhere as the PS2 is the only console to get the love in that department.
Excerpt: I’m not a fanatical video basketball player, but most years I try to get the “best of breed” title to play that year. The result of this is that lately I’ve been alternating between Sega and EA, sometimes even going back to the Sega Dreamcast. With each new year, it gets harder and harder to tell the difference between games by the two companies, as both make parallel advances, each with its own signature style.
Excerpt: You have no idea how many hours in college I spent playing “NBA Live”. I swear, I spent more time playing this game with my friends then I did in class (It’s amazing that I even graduated!). Why did I spend so much time playing this game? ‘Cause it was the best basketball game out at the time. From the Genesis versions, to the PC version of “NBA Live 2000”, you couldn’t tell me there was a better basketball game at the time. But then it all fell apart.
Conclusion: So what do we have here? Well I think we have a decent to good game that could have been a great game, had it been cleaned up a little (maybe a lot). The lack of online support is also going to be a killer for quite a few gamers out there especially as its other two competitors have full online support. The developers have the right idea and are taking the game in the right direction, but I feel that 2004 may be the year that NBA LIVE truly shines. Here's hoping.
Pros: great animation, superior sound, challenging
Cons: cheap/cheating AI, no Live support, basic, out of proportion player models, poor passing game, plenty of small flaws
