Mashed Review

VideoGamer.com
26 June 2005
  • Excerpt: Four pads, Four people, One TV, One console = FUN. It's a recipe that's worked exceptionally well for many great racing games in the past; Mario Kart, Micro Machines and Speed Freaks spring to mind, amongst others. They encapsulate what's great about social gaming. All the fun that goes with the shouting and cursing. It's shunting your mate from the track, as they are tantalizingly close to a match winning point.

  • Excerpt: Its a bold company that takes on the likes of the huge Micro Machines franchise. Its an even bolder company that runs that huge franchise close in terms of quality and playability – twice. A while ago, the UK developers of the Megadrive’s cracking mini-racer Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament – Supersonic Software – branched away from the franchise and released their own cartoon racing title Circuit Breakers for the PSOne, which did more than pay a passing nod of...

  • Excerpt: Before the era of 3D gaming, the racing genre largely consisted of travelling from A to B in the quickest time. And that was it. However, the most memorable exception to this trend was 1993's Super Mario Kart, which incorporated weapons into its races. And it was this game along with a handful of others like it that opened developers' eyes to the potential of combat-based racing.

  • Conclusion: It's games like Mashed that radiate a nostalgic air - they're simple concepts, with simple graphics and simple controls, yet the outcome is maddeningly addictive. Perhaps I'm getting too old for this at 23 years, but I love this sort of old-school stuff. Bring it on!
