Grabbed by the Ghoulies Review

IGN Entertainment

  • Conclusion: While Grabbed by the Ghoulies wasn’t what we were expecting as the first Rare title on the Xbox, it certainly showcases a lot of the elements that have made their previous games successful for Nintendo. The presentation and cutesy storyline is straight out of a children’s storybook and will appeal to both youngsters and those gamers looking for a break from the rash of violent titles hitting the industry.

  • Excerpt: I like to put a little humour into my reviews. Whether it’s a multilayered gag appealing to every facet of humanity, the odd spot of biting political satire or an intellectual quip aimed at the classically educated, I manage to meld some mirth into the analysis. Actually, having re-read my reviews, the humour, if you can call it that, seems to consist entirely of smutty double entendres.

The Next Level
20 November 2003
  • Excerpt: It all goes down on a dark and stormy night, like all scary stories, spoofs, and spins are supposed to. Don’t ask me why Cooper and Amber are in the middle of nowhere; don’t ask why Cooper didn’t take his lovely lady’s suggestion of going back. Never mind that - what’s important is that these decisions lead the two to this haunted mansion, backdrop for all the gameplay that will commence.

Game Over Online
7 November 2003
  • Excerpt: When Microsoft purchased UK-based developer Rare for $375 million just over a year ago, the debate began as to whether the creators of Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie were worth the investment, and what would their inaugural Xbox effort be: A new installment in the Killer Instinct series, a sequel to Perfect Dark, another bad fur day for Conker? Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Who with the what now?

The cel-shaded action game begins as Cooper and his gal pal Amber approach a mansion cheerfully named Ghoulhaven Hall. Amber is spirited off by a group of nasties, and Cooper gallantly rushes in to rescue his lady love.

Active Network
17 December 2004
  • Summary: "The sound is ok, but not as good as it could have been with too many similar grunts from zombies and such like being used over and over. Musically it is excellent though, it's just the lack of what could be comical voice-overs that lets the game down on this part if you ask me, although some people seem to enjoy reading text in rare games, personally I don't." "If there is one thing that Grabbed by the Ghoulies does well, it is the presentation, but more of this later.
  • Pros: Excellent Graphics, Some good characters, Some funny moments
  • Cons: Gameplay is repetitive, No variety in the game

Grabbed by the Ghoulies Xbox Review

DarkZero
18 December 2003
  • Conclusion: Grabbed by the Ghoulies is fun in places but you will feel let down by the repetitive dull gameplay and the fact that this gameplay only last a maximum of 8 hours is disappointing to. It has a hint of that Rare magic in it but it is hidden far to deep inside for anyone to bother finding it. It feels like a game you want to love and have on more go on, but you find yourself saying “why bother”. It is a average effort by Rare’s standards and we all know they can do better.
