Grabbed by the Ghoulies Review

IGN Entertainment

  • Conclusion: While Grabbed by the Ghoulies wasn’t what we were expecting as the first Rare title on the Xbox, it certainly showcases a lot of the elements that have made their previous games successful for Nintendo. The presentation and cutesy storyline is straight out of a children’s storybook and will appeal to both youngsters and those gamers looking for a break from the rash of violent titles hitting the industry.

  • Excerpt: I like to put a little humour into my reviews. Whether it’s a multilayered gag appealing to every facet of humanity, the odd spot of biting political satire or an intellectual quip aimed at the classically educated, I manage to meld some mirth into the analysis. Actually, having re-read my reviews, the humour, if you can call it that, seems to consist entirely of smutty double entendres.

  • Summary: Rare's Grabbed by the Ghoulies is the legendary developer's first effort on the Xbox and we're happy to report that the game is a winner. With instantly accessible controls, simple play mechanics and addictive gameplay, it's an immediately appealing title. The gorgeous cel-shaded graphics are impressive with colorful environments fluid character animation.

  • Excerpt: The wizards at Rare are easily one of the most beloved development studios around. Long the secret behind some of Nintendo's best games, Rare has a new home and they're starting to get their Xbox groove on. Grabbed by the Ghoulies is a bit too simple to be a hit for those looking for the Perfect Dark experience, but it will probably fare better with the kiddies and will no doubt find its way into a stocking or two. • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: Rare have made the transition from Nintendo to Microsoft and started off with a worthwhile concept that ultimately drags on a bit too long. Fans of the developer will find much to enjoy, and the fantastic presentation will entrance just about everyone else. The game lacks the depth that would make it a keeper, but it should adequately entertain anyone who dares enter its haunted doors.

  • Excerpt: It all goes down on a dark and stormy night, like all scary stories, spoofs, and spins are supposed to. Don’t ask me why Cooper and Amber are in the middle of nowhere; don’t ask why Cooper didn’t take his lovely lady’s suggestion of going back. Never mind that - what’s important is that these decisions lead the two to this haunted mansion, backdrop for all the gameplay that will commence.
