Gladius Review

IGN Entertainment
9 February 2008
  • Conclusion: Xbox has lacked a strong strategy game and instantly had gamers thirsting for Gladius since its announcement. When I received the preview build a while back I was a bit skeptical to how the final version of this game would turn out. I was shocked to see the time and quality that the development team has put into creating a unique gaming experience in an aging genre. Gladius is by far unmatched in terms of character control in the strategy/RPG genre.

  • Excerpt: Though LucasArts is typically known for its ongoing adventures with the Star Wars series, the company also has experience with several other genres. Series such as Monkey Island and Indiana Jones are also well known to gamers, and in an attempt to deliver something else new to video games, LucasArts has come up with Gladius for Xbox.

Into Liquid Sky
16 October 2004
  • Excerpt: Gladiator-style games seem to be a genre that hasn't seen much in the way of coverage. The same can be said for Strategy RPGs not developed in Japan (like Nippon Ichi, Squaresoft or Atlus).
  • Pros: Lots of added elements to freshen up the genre, Two lengthy story paths, Tons of customization, Nonlinear progression through each region
  • Cons: Lots of loading, Graphics and audio could use more polish, Why develop your allies when you can buy better ones?

Gladius

Just RPG
15 October 2004
  • Excerpt: If you yearn for a profound, convoluted, tactically strategic, turn-based combat RPG, where neither the story nor the side quests get in the way, then Gladius will float your boat. Gladius plunges the player into the primitive world of gladiators, where hundreds of battles are in store for the player. The game provides roughly 50 hours of engrossing gaming, akin to its seeming, renowned predecessors, like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre .

The Armchair Empire
23 May 2004
  • Conclusion: While the game will have many of its 16 races of characters based on actual gladiator types who really fought in ancient Rome, it also mixes in magical and mythical characters such as the witches of the Galdr class, minotaurs, and other monstrous creatures of Roman mythology. Graphically the game is shaping up nicely so far, with good character models and sharply-detailed rendered environments.

Game Over Online
18 December 2003
  • Excerpt: Thank Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe for re-awakening interest in Rome and gladiatorial combat. You have to admit that the action sequences of the movie stirred something primal in the minds of the viewer: a thirst for blood at watching athletic warriors fighting to the death. Dusty arenas echoing the screams of the wounded and the cheers of the crowd. The clang of weapons and the clatter of shields.

Game Over Online
18 December 2003
  • Excerpt: I’m going to break from my traditional format of reviewing and make a personal observation up front: This review will not do this game justice. Before your alarm bells go off, let me state that the complexity of the strategy found within Gladius will easily make this a favorite of hard core strategy fanatics and RPG fans alike. However, the presentation of the game is accessible for beginners or newbies to this kind of tactical RPG.

Gladius

GamersHell.com
29 November 2003
  • Excerpt: LucasArts have once again made one of those games that can keep you on your couch playing for a long time, if you're a turn-based RPG fan of course. Gladius is as a good as it looks! The game takes place in a world of ancient Roman themed gladiator stadiums. This world is at war and everything is settled in ancient gladiator style. The game starts with the selection between two characters.
