FlatOut Review

IGN Entertainment
9 February 2008
  • Conclusion: For slightly less than premium coin, you can own a great compliment to the other extreme-style racers on the market. It’s hard to compare FlatOut to the other extreme games on the market, but that’s a good thing since it feels fresh in many aspects.

  • Excerpt: FlatOut has hit the market at what could easily be called the worst possible time. We've just relatively recently had Need for Speed Underground 2, Gran Turismo 4, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and Forza Motorsport, not to mention the die-hard classics like Burnout 3: Takedown.

  • Excerpt: Racing games are looking up. Recently, we’ve had the likes of Burnout 3: Takedown seriously dominating our playtime, titles like Rockstar’s Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition , Eidos’ Crash ‘n’ Burn and EA’s Need For Speed Underground 2 are chock-full of potential and to top it all off, a bit of a...

  • Excerpt: Empire Interactive spoils the driving genre-loving gaming public for the second time in two weeks in the autumn of 2004: first there was the surprisingly playable and 'cheaper and better than OutRun2' offering that was Ford Racing 3; now we get a real treat with FlatOut, courtesy of Finland's...

  • Excerpt: A rip-roaring mix of circuitous rally racing and smash-up derby carnage, FlatOut steers just clear of typical by removing the seatbelts from each car and adding a "ragdoll physics" element more commonly seen in fighting and shooting games.

  • Excerpt: This game has been getting alot of hype for a racing game not belonging to the Gran Turismo, or Project Gotham Racing series. What i thought was another 3rd party game, turned out to be 1st party worthy.

Game Over Online
18 July 2005
  • Excerpt: What I'm getting at is the fact that FlatOut has some very, very steep competition. Releasing a racing game at this point would be like releasing a stealth action game after Metal Gear Solid 3 or Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. You'd better bring something excellent to the table or risk being panned.

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: Whilst it may not be as good as Burnout 3 in the long run, it is good fun in its own right and well worth a try even if you already own the Takedown king. The Bonus events are a very welcome highlight.

FlatOut

2 July 2006
  • Conclusion: For those of you who’ve played Burnout 3 you can appreciate the importance of a good soundtrack when driving fast and smashing stuff up. B3 also had the option for custom soundtracks to create your own “Smashin’ music” . FlatOut has neither.
  • Pros: Looks purty., Fast and furious gameplay., Some depth with the car tuning., The stupid ragdoll mini games.
  • Cons: Dodgy handling., The cars seem pretty much the same, and even the heavy ones feel too light., The music., Frustrating restarts., That damn screech whenever your driver flies out the window!, Enough with the ragdoll already.
