Excerpt: Taking FPS games in a new direction can be a risky proposition at times. Messing with the formula of run and gun can sometimes result in disaster, but if done correctly can usher in a true sleeper hit amongst the masses. Far Cry was released a while back on PC and was originally made simply to show off the newest technology, what happened was the game was actually pretty damn good.
Conclusion: X-Men fans are a hardcore crowd and it is inherently difficult to please them. There is very little in X-Men: The Official Game that feels like any different the hundreds of other button mashing titles before it. Nightcrawler and his teleportation attacks are a definite highlight, but the majority of the game is a mundane romp from Point A to Point B, with a number of unintelligent enemies blocking the way.
Conclusion: Far Cry Instincts is one of the better games for the Xbox that have been adapted in some form from an earlier PC title. While not perfect, Far Cry Instincts does provide hours of campaign gameplay, a decent multiplayer mode, and enough variance to keep one’s interest until the Xbox 360 launch. I’m expecting Far Cry Instincts to receive lots of love in the online communities even though it’s a “PC” title, and the strong A.I. guarantees groupies for the Campaign action.
Excerpt: Far Cry Instincts is a tough game to judge. You see, for every bit of gorgeous jungle environment and well-judged set piece, there is a sloppily-executed and predictably tedious slog, or a number of glitches which can’t help but detract from the overall experience. You play Jack Carver – a former marine turned tourist boat captain.
Excerpt: With Microsoft's new console due in a few months and their focus firmly shifted to their new hope, many people assumed that the Xbox had seen its best days. Ubisoft appear to have had other ideas, with the release of Far Cry Instincts. The PC original struck fame thanks to its impressive visuals, open environments and smart AI, and this totally original Xbox game is just as impressive in its own right.
Excerpt: Preview: Far Cry Instincts (Xbox) By Michael Palisano Based on Ubisoft's impressive PC shooter, Far Cry Instincts has been retooled and revamped exclusively for the Xbox with a deeper storyline and additional features. The game remains impressive and mixes traditional FPS elements with stealth action, supernatural abilities and more. The game's graphics engine looks like it will come surprisingly close to matching the beautiful visuals seen in the PC version.
Excerpt: First-person shooters are such a by-the-numbers genre that it's a welcome breath of fresh air when a developer incorporates some genuinely unique elements to differentiate its game from the run-and-gun style that even the best shooters complacently settle into. Such is the case with Far Cry Instincts. Not to be mistaken as a direct port of last year's PC original Far Cry, Instincts is an original game that is essentially a heavily altered version of the PC game.
Excerpt: Jack Carver is having a bit of a rubbish day. One minute, he’s on a boat with photographer Val Cortez on a journalistic trip to the reef just off the remote Jacutan Islands, the next, Cortez has done a runner with his jet ski, and a fully decked out military chopper is igniting fuel (with the help of a couple of hundred bullets) on his boat, and he’s forced to jump ship. And so it begins. You take control of Carver in a typical FPS setup, where its you against the world.
Excerpt: As the addition of the word “Instincts” to the title implies, Far Cry Instincts is not the same game that was released on PCs last year. The word “Instincts” is more than just something used to differentiate versions of the game, though; it refers to a fundamental change you’ll go through during the game as you go back to nature, so to speak. But before I get into that let’s take a look at how the biggest disaster to hit a tourist junket since the wreck of the S.S.
