Dead Man’s Hand Review

IGN Entertainment
9 February 2008
  • Conclusion: The term “on paper” gets thrown around quite a bit in the media, particularly when referencing a sport’s team that has a lot of popular talent, but lacks chemistry; they are therefore only good “on paper”. Dead Man’s Hand could be considered a game that is great on paper. A later generation Unreal engine, a unique story era, online multiplayer; it all looks like the makings of an all-star title, but what Dead Man’s Hand lacks are the basics which are integral to stellar...

Dead Man's Hand

GamesPaper

  • Conclusion: There's a good game "hiding in them there hills" which fans of the Wild West will really love, but a few unpolished aspects to Dead Man's Hand ultimately disappoint - a shame when you consider there's bar brawls, horseback shoot-outs and a whole range of other action which could have snatched the attention from the now somewhat ancient but still unbeaten Mad Dog McCree.

  • Excerpt: “Riding on the range, I've got my hat - on, I've got my boots - dusty. I've got my saddle On my horse. He's called....T-t-t-t-t-trigger Of course. I wanna be a cowboy and you can be my cowgirl I wanna be a cowboy and you can be my cowgirl I wanna be a cowboy…” OK, OK, I admit it! I do want to be a cowboy. The open range, big sky, sleeping under the stars, always on the move, the whole cowboy thing sounds pretty darned good. And what could be better than a cowboy?

  • Conclusion: In SoE, you can engage in hand-to-hand combat, or pick up ranged weapons for melee attacks. There’s the punch and kick button, and you can pull of combos to deal that much need extra damage to your opposition. Corporation agents or even gang members often gang up on you, and you can pick up weapons like swords, or bats to hold them at bay, or press triangle to execute a 360 degrees roundhouse move.

  • Conclusion: Dead Mans Hand is a solid FPS with a great story and setting. Its no Halo, but its definitely well made. It's addictive, creative and fun. Its not long but its not short. I don't suggest you go out and buy this right away, but I recommend you rent it. The game is great but if it wasn't for the Rag doll physics and the cool ol' west style it would just be another FPS.

  • Conclusion: Quite how to rate a game like this is a problem for me. See, some people out there think that for a game to be awarded the maximum score means that it has to be the perfect game, perfect in absolutely every way. I disagree. In my mind, a game which touches my heart, stirs my soul, makes me laugh, gives me chills with its sheer beauty, and sucks me so deep into its virtual world that I never want to resurface, that game has done all it needs to do to warrant a perfect...
