187 Ride or Die

Game Vortex

  • Excerpt: 187 Ride or Die looks fantastic, making looks one of the game's few high points. In particular, the car and city models look great and show off some really nice details and sharp texture work. The looks are enhanced by Burnout -level lighting and special effects that give the game that graphical "pop" few others are able to pull off. I was also impressed to see how well the developers were able to pull off the "feel" of driving around Los Angeles.

  • Excerpt: It’s not often that I find myself reading the License agreement to a game, but I somehow accidentally did that for Ubisoft’s PS2 game 187 Ride or Die. I think I was hoping to find out what the 187 meant in the title. I didn’t find that (my newest theory is that it’s the police code for homicide) but I did run across this little bit of truth: “The User recognizes that he uses 187 Ride or Die at his own risk.

  • Conclusion: 187 Ride or Die is a bit of a cheesebomb of a game. The dialogue is just nasty - and not in that good, Janet Jackson way, rather in the traditional, rancid way. The game itself when you get to play - fine in small doses, but really, the shooting gimmick is just that, and the driving has been done better elsewhere. The visuals - again okay, but nothing extraordinary. An "average" game in most respects, and subpar in one - the script. Disappointing.
  • Pros: Briefly diverting, Some top line voice talent...
  • Cons: ...wasted with some really forced dialogue

  • Conclusion: Not groundbreaking by a long shot, and a bit slack for something developed by the people behind XIII and King Kong, but an interesting idea that - if it had more depth and longevity - would be tremendously gratifying. Here's hoping for a sequel with more polish.
