Summary: When purchasing a product I assume that it has been tested and will function properly. Not so with this TL-WA830RE Extender. Out of the box it would not connect with my router using WPS. But after considerable fiddling, I manually configured it and got it to receive and repeat. Unfortunately it lost connection with the router within 30 minutes, and sporadically connected and dropped out thereafter, even when I placed it within 12 feet of the router.
Summary: Instructions could get quite confusing. It loses signal every few minutes, so if you are connected through a VPN service or similar, prepare to be re-connecting at least three times an hour. It took me more time than desired to figure out how to make it work properly. The good news is that when it works, it does a good job. I would definitely not buy it again.
Summary: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Have to reset it every couple days, which becomes a pain in the butt. Unfortunate that my laptop seems to connect to this one every time because when it goes out I'm left without internet until I unplug it and let my laptop connect to my main internet source. Nowadays I just leave this unplugged until I need it for something specific.
Summary: I have tried for over a month to make this work, but it continues to create conflicts with my Verizon router. Tp-link's customer service personnel were not helpful. I even hired a college IT person, but he was unable to make it work. I should have given up sooner and returned it.
Summary: You get what you pay for. It would not work properly, regardless of how I tried to set it up. The software would not work properly when connected for manual setup. I Wasted several hours. I am tech-savvy, so no, it wasn't my incompetence, it's just a poor product.
Summary: I had trouble to make it work in the beginning and was thinking to return it. However, after I fondled it a little and repositioned it close to the router, it seemed working alright, but I noticed that the overall speed is somehow lower. This is still a good buy.
Excerpt: I had high hopes for this unit judging from the product description and the reported ease of installation and 24/7 tech support. I was on the telephone 3 separate times with their support staff and was never able to get the unit activated. Unfortunately, their staff had such a difficult time communicating in English that they were severely hindered from helping me.
Summary: Using it to boost the Internet signal from the house to a metal shop garage about 100 feet away. Able to receive a great signal inside the building even though there's no windows. Setup was actually pretty easy though I had to call support due to my own ignorance. Support was extremely patient and helpful and resolved the problem quickly, which was my own error.
