Edimax EW-7438RPn extender

George G., Newegg
18 March 2014
  • Summary: It is difficult for me to imagine that others have not seen this same failure since I (unfortunately) purchased three units over 3 weeks time and all three units eventually failed. (After buying and testing the first unit, I bought the other two for my girlfriend and my brother.
  • Pros: They worked for a few months.
  • Cons: I have bought THREE of these units. All three exhibit the same failure mechanism. After using the product for 3 months, all connecting devices show a Wi-Fi error. The extender then has to be turned off and then back on. This occurs more and more frequently (once every two weeks, once every week, once every day) until the unit refuses to reboot normally. (The front lights don't come on in the normal order.) I want to be very clear, this happened after 3 to 5 months on ...

Messed up almost immeditately

Sean C., Newegg
3 August 2013
  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Refuses to hold a Wi-Fi signal. I do systems automation for a living and this extender refused to keep a Wi-Fi signal with my Cisco router. I have read other reviews where this extender has issues with Cisco routers, so maybe that is the root problem. It not only refused to hold a signal, it messed up another port on my router. I lost LAN connectivity on my router for almost an entire day. I had to go through an entire reset process before my system would work again. ...

If you want more control go with multiple DD-WRT routers

Johnathan W., Newegg
29 July 2013
  • Summary: I was using 3 DD-WRT routers before, but decided to give this a shot when my primary router and modem got fried in a storm. Not worth it. Using multiple DD-WRT AP's allowed me to set them up as one SSID and roam between the access points with no problems.
  • Pros: It technically extends the wifi range. Pretty cheap.
  • Cons: Experience so far has been terrible. During setup you're supposed to be able to connect via Hostname, but this never resolves. Have to look at the DHCP tables and find the IP address and connect that way. Doesn't extend the current SSID so no roaming from AP to AP. Each AP has it's own SSID. I'm using 2 of these to extend my wifi with the internal DHCP server disabled. For some reason I get IP conflicts if I use the wired port on this device. Design is poor. Doesn't f...

  • Summary: I had high hopes for this wifi extender but unfortunately it wasn't to be. It loses the connection to the router constantly and it isn't even that far away.

  • Summary: I started with it plugged in close to the room that I wanted a stronger signal in. I moved it several times, ending up close to my router. The signal from the extender was always lower than the signal directly from my router. I returned it to WalMart.
